UPDATED + Pics - Birth Year Watch Incoming...

Post by Waerla »

I had to pull the trigger on this simply because of the year, yes it's a non runner but I'm sure with a modicum of TLC something can be done. Also while composing this I have picked up a running movement for under £10 so things are looking good.

But how often is it that you will find one with the original bakelite box, outer box, original documents AND a signed statement from the original owner stating why it was bought ?

Congratulations!

This can be a fun project. Great that you have all original box and papers. Those are a tough find.

Looking forward to the restoration photos.

Late '50s, by any chance? I had a birth year Bulova (1957) but it was just too small for me. Good luck with the project.

It's amazing what you can dig up on t'internet when you try. Due to the handwritten note which gave the original recipients name, and the school they graduated from I have actually found his high school yearbook online with his picture in....So this is what the guy looked like when the watch was first worn.

Both the watch and the replacement movement have now left Erlanger, KY en route the UK ETA 17th November. I'm not expecting any delay as the duties are prepaid, so 11 days and counting. I'm Quite eager to get it now that I have discovered some real history of it.

The watch originally cost about $35.75 which makes it just shy of $300 in todays terms.

I must stop surfing... I just found this TV Ad from 1958 as well and it says buy the Bulova Senator as a graduation gift. I think we can agree the power of advertising worked for at least one purchase...

Ok the watch has arrived...

The crystal needs replacing so I have one on order, also when uncasing the movement, the crown detached, fortunately the stem thread is OK so now a replacement for that has been ordered.

The watch was not running and I discovered the screw holding the cog on the barrel was loose so tightened it, and it wound Ok. Still not running though, balance seemed to swing OK as I had a movement for parts, I removed the balance and cock assembly to check the escapement function which when the fork was moved very gently side to side moved as it should. I cleaned the balance staff pivots with Rodico and reassembled. As the mainspring was partially wound no sooner than it was screwed back into place, it burst into life.

So once the cosmetics are sorted all that will be needed is a service.

I also have photos to post for a before during and after view.
