I have a suspicion the date was set to the 6th and was hiding under the minute hand. This borrowed pic shows it clearly:

Thank you so much. It saves me having to resize the original again.

I'm building up a little stock of avatars...I was getting a bit fed up with Don Sandeman. :D

Well, I'm a fan of 70s watches and this is one that I'd be happy owning. I also like green dials or accents on my watches, so double points from me there. ;)

I really like it. The watch at 38mm would be large enough for me due to the cushion case wearing larger than round styles and from the photos the green strap seems to be dark enough to not be too blingy and matches the dial highlights nicely.

A lovely pickup there! It will be a nice variation from (as you say) your more usual small round gold watches.

P.S. Even though I'm a fan of them, there are many 70s watches that even I don't like! This is a perfect example of a good 'un.

As someone who doesn't normally go for black faced dials I really, really like that watch.

Thanks for all the nice comments, folks. We all like our new babies to be admired, don't we? :D

So, one week on and, apart from one day when I NEEDED to wear a chronograph, the Kon-Tiki has not been off my wrist except to shower and swim. I haven't been able to do the full "one watch for a week" thing, but I have been looking at wearing the same one for at least two or three days. Automatics start to make more sense when you do that, and I can see that they are an excellent choice for the "one watch" or "daily work watch" scenario.

This one was always going to be a keeper. The fact that it ended up coming to me as a gift makes it doubly so. It is also helping to overcome my phobia of '70s watch styling, though I think the wackier stuff will always be beyond me. This and the Dynamic are probably about my big-enough style-wise. In many ways they make a nice pair, with differences of appearance but the nice wearable shape and superb movement in common. I haven't done a proper timing test on this one, but it has been between +10 and +15 per day. Hack and count to 12 every day and it wouldn't be far out...Hmm, that gives me an idea for an experiment...adjustment by rate and approximation...do that every day for a week with no reference to other time sources and where will it end up? It's a bit like Heyerdahl's notion of pointing the bow west and going with the flow! :D

My "first" Kon-Tiki is a fantastic watch. I shall always have an eye open for another vintage. I'm still in two minds about whether I NEED the modern one, but I find it very attractive indeed. We shall see. Thanks for reading!

IMO your "first" Kon-Tiki is a lovely watch and I have feeling that it will not be the "last" Kon-Tiki. I might be wrong but the "NEED" seems to strong.

On a German forum I read some rumours about new versions of the Kontiki: http://uhrforum.de/neue-eterna-kontiki- ... no-t201634

In my opinion they're not as nice as the current version (and are not on the official website yet)...

Just a quick update. I think I have pretty much decided now to pass on the new model as, having tried it on, it is just a bit too big.

After two weeks, the Kontiki 20 has been absolutely brilliant. It gains, as I said, between 10 and 15 seconds a day – but it obligingly loses something reasonably similar when it is in the box. It has been worn very regularly and hasn't actually been allowed to stop yet. This morning it was reading -2 seconds and hasn't been adjusted for over a week.

I think I need to get one or two others back on the wrist this week. :D
