Polerouters: Similar but different

Post by Wis »

Sorry if you've seen these too many times. I've tried to keep everything but the watch the same, the better to illustrate how different they are despite very similar/identical design.

Thanks Kip, the young Gerald Genta knew what he was doing.

i've eyeballed a few on ebay. i had an odd affinity to one with a pale blue dial for a while, but the reserve on it was higher than i was willing to go. but i have to say that i do like them for dress watches. they're unique without being, well... too unique. if that makes sense.

I don't need much persuasion to show mine!

A classic design that to my mind, doesn't even look retro or vintage. It's as modern today as it was in the '50s.

When I consider some of my other vintage watches that are in very good condition (so the condition does not influence one's view of how old it is):

1. I love the Omega Dynamic but it screams '70s retro

2. my Wittnauer (also my Omega Seamaster De Ville but its tiny size will give it away anyway) may look cool in a Mad Men way, but you also know this was not a watch made recently. It's dated, somehow.

3. my Longines rectangular is sooooo Art Deco. Even if it's in good condition, you just know it's OLD.

My Polerouter (and Bjorn's all rose gold version)? I think people who don't know watches might actually think it's something new.

Very nice Kip.

Stunning picture Asqwert. I like the freckled black dial against the warm golden hue.

Hi Wis, I'm new to this forum. What can you tell me about the watch in the second photo. I just acquired the same model from my father, who received it as a gift in 1955 or 56. I've learned a lot about Polerouters from various online sources today and I'm loving them.

Hi Rickrok. Sorry I missed your question. Well, I can't really tell you much. The design is the original one designed by Gerald Genta, with the bombe lugs. Small by today's standard, the diameter is 35mm. Perfect size for a dress watch. They are also thin, because the famous micro rotor movements are thin. Very elegant watches. High quality. It has the 215-07 movement.
Have it serviced and pressure tested and put it on a nice strap and enjoy it.
