Open Heart Seikory.

Post by Thermexman »

I tried to change the capacitor on my 20yr old Seiko Kinetic Auto Relay last week but had to admit defeat, when I couldn’t get the back off. A little investment in some better (although not by much) tools and I managed it today.
Quite pleased with myself. I know it’s not a big deal to some of you but with my eye sight not being what it used to be, even with specs, those tiny screws were nigh on impossible.
I got lucky when one screw went flying, hit the side of the tray I was working on and bounced back to right next to my watch! Whew!!!
Don’t think I’ll tackle anything more taxing though?
A bit of elbow grease with the Cape Cod too. A new lease of life for this trusty companion.

It’s a rite of passage replacing a kinetic capacitor! part of which is the symbolic pinging of those capacitor cover screws across the table. I’ve been there and got the medal🏅

It’s interesting that your capacitor looks like it is just electrically connected via single screw copper connector. Mine, a 5M42 movement, has a metal plate with two protruding connectors soldered to the back of the capacitor.

Thanks for the pics. I've never seen a kinetic movement before. Always interesting to see something new.

Unfortunately, my commute time would be a tad too much at circa 70 miles each way.
