I wasn’t remotely into watches when I turned 50. That all came during the next decade.
On my 50th birthday I was on a singles holiday in Turkey, one of those where the company takes over a small villa hotel for the season. It was a typical August scorcher and I went microlighting around the coast in the morning with an Irish guy from the group. We had a few beers around the pool at lunchtime, and in the evening I found that the lovely hosts had decorated the bar, and were serving champagne cocktails to everyone. I hadn’t told them, but of course they check your passport when you arrive. I was the guest of honour at dinner, they had a cake, a nice present and a card signed by everyone. We went out after dinner and I don’t remember buying any drinks.
I wasn’t in a wheelchair and no one gave me a watch box. My present was a nice wallet (not a fake LV or anything like that)
