So I bought a Malvern 595 and then a Trident 65 in the sale. I have been sitting on the Trident for a couple of days, but I just decided to unwrap it, and get it going. I wasn't sure, because of the winding on the 595
The winding on the 595 is just so stiff. It only takes about 18 turns to fully wind it. I saw comments on here that maybe the gearing was too low, but saw other comments that the winding stem had actually just pulled out.
Whatever the cause, the winder on the 595 seemed unreasonably stiff, and I can quite see it breaking off or pulling away at some point. Anyway, I just tried the Trident 65, and it's completely different. Just smooth and gentle as I expected the 595 to be, as well as looking great too. It didn't take many more turns to fully wind, so I don't think it's a gearing issue with the 595.
I think I will raise a query with CW to see if my 595 is just a bad example, or whether they are all like that.

Do you think the smaller crown on the 595 is influencing the apparent stiffness of winding?
That is to say, being smaller you have to exert a greater torque for the same winding effort of a larger crown.

Re: Chalk and Cheese - Manual Winders
This was my thought as well, Guy. However, I did take the liberty of winding one at the Bristol GTG last year (under the watchful eye of Declan, naturally!) and it didn’t seem particularly stiff.
