How far will watch prices drop?

Post by Thegreyman »

I just wondered what your opinions were on what the current crisis will do to watch prices.

The obvious answer is that it will have a downward impact, but to what extent. Personally I'm not planning to make any significant future watch purchases until the impact on my job and the wider economy is known (although I did put a deposit down for a comparatively modest but LE watch before this started, so I need to decide whether to go through with that in May). So with many other people likely to be of a similar mindset, you can see a lot of high street AD's with Longines, Oris, Tudor etc more willing to discuss a discount than ever, maybe Omega, Breitling and other "high end" brands too.

Even the prodigious Rolex looks to have already fallen. A new, unworn BLNR latest model can be had for £11,495 from a UK dealer on Chrono24, the current Pepsi £13,750. Both of these seem a few £k lower than the last time I looked. So maybe a Rolex AD will give you the time of day and get you on "the list" the next time you pop in for a chat

I guess they'll fall neatly in line with people's wages and general turnover. Very few are going to be left untouched by this.

If it's anything like my pension fund, expect around 25%!

I wouldn't worry about that unless you're retiring soon.

I think new prices will remain static and companies will postpone any price rises in the near future.
Pre-owned prices I expect to fall, possibly good if you are not looking to buy new?

Similar drop for me. I was planning on retiring this summer, it may be delayed now.

I think that prices will outwardly remain more or less untouched, but negotiation backed by hard cash will be fruitful. I also think that now is not yet the time in general ( a few liquidity starved dealers may be desperate already) the real pain is going to come towards autumn. I counsel patience.

As a sideline to the primary question, much as Pension Fund values have dropped in recent weeks, mine have, they will (I expect) in time recover to their previous levels.

On the primary question, I'm thinking new RRPs will likely remain static, helped by Manufacturers/Brands delaying proposed 2020 model introductions for a year Rolex and Tudor, amongst others, have done this already, although we might well see ADs with big discount Sales to clear stock and create cashflow.

Pre-owned prices/values will likely be dependent on, and follow, new prices.

Just my two pence worth.

 yeah I feel your pain. I've probably got 25 to go.

Rest easy on the pension fund though. Historically, the stock market has ALWAYS recovered.

Watches are discretionary expenditure.

The means of people living on a day to day basis are essentials.

Many have large mortgages.

Many have expensive cars bought with PCP.

Many people have other debt.

The average person in the UK has negligible savings.

Many will unfortunately lose their employment or their business will fold.

In view of the above it is difficult to envisage that watch sales will be anything other than severely hit, for the vast majority of brands.

So long as one lives long enough! And if counted in paper money, recalling that the £ has only lost 99% of its value since 1971.

Agree totally, though I fear even worse.
