Day Date watches

Post by missF »

I was well impressed that StrappedUp has done a 12 to 4 consolidation. I think this is as much a WIS endeavour as going in the opposite direction.

Because I’m not particularly a flipper it has taken me a while to figure out what features I like in a watch. Because my head has recently been off in the clouds I now have trouble remembering the day never mind the date.

I’m now considering consolidating my collection around a white dial seiko day date with WR of 3 atm..... (shock horror  :irre: ). It could consider it my go-to budget version of a polar explorer

I bought a tissot day date recently which was a bit of a mistake. Are there any day date watches you know of that I should consider, or is it seiko all the way?

Mido make a nice Multifort Powermatic 80 chronometer day date.

Come in different finishes and strap options...the cheapest one I could find was this...it's an excellent watch. Great sapphire and anti reflective coating. Very good timekeeping and the Si Hairspring option. Nicely readable day date.

Have you considered Damasko? I like the way they have implemented the day/date - slightly off-centre.

Thanks. This probably isn’t my daily wear but it’s interesting to see a day-date on a dressier watch

Depending on size constraint, you could do a lot worse than pick up a CW BDD SH for reasonable money. Not only day and date, but big enough to see without glasses! (Sadly now very necessary in yours truly.)

^^^^ Thanks. I was just looking at the Damasko DA37, which is gorgeous, but I’m keen on good legibility too.

@Richard - I think you had a DA20 for a while - the day-date looks a bit small - how was it for legibility?

Cheers

^^^ Well, the sinn 556 is almost my dream watch. But it’s not a day-date. I’d forgotten how complicated owning watches can be....

I still have the DA20, Lindsey - although it spent some time on secondment to my daughter, who loves it.

As for legibility, it depends how good your eyes are!

Honestly, I think my slight criticism of Damasko would be that the day/date apertures are quite small and because they don't have any kind of border, they can tend to create a shadow over the day/date, which does reduce legibility. This just means you may need to look at the day/date straight on rather from an extreme angle. I don't want to overstate the issue though.

Perhaps this image demonstrates it...

In the past I also had a DA37, which had better contrast.

Not so good in the dark though.

I'd also recommend the Damasko DA37

I’m not sure if this would be your thing, probably too dressy but it’s my only day date. 40mm, 80 hour power reserve. Wouldn’t break the bank for a used one.

Thanks for the pic. I think the damasko watches with highlight colour on the second hand are funky, but the plain black and white of the DA37 would let you go wild with different colour straps.
