Timex M79 Automatic

Post by TheBeatles »

I know some of you were very interested in the Q Timex Reissue 38mm Stainless Steel.

I’ve just received an email about their new release, this one is 40mm:-

Thanks for the heads up, Brian.

A review by A Blog to Watch has just come through to my email Inbox.

Whilst its an interesting watch and undeniably good value for an Automatic, the BLNR style has no particular attraction for me and it doesn't quite have the same cachet, even in a larger 40mm, as the earlier Q-Timex reissue, which I have.

Its a 'no' from me. :(

It is an attractive dial face, though..

It's different I guess, but priced at £249, I'd be inclined to go for a Seiko, Citizen or Orient diver.

Having grown up in the 60's with Timex, this one is not for me. I do find myself drawn to the Marlin though

That would be the exact reason I’d buy this though.. everyone has those brands, timex is a cool brand and that’s a pretty automatic and a good tool watch

^^^ that's fair enough, but the aforementioned divers are popular for good reason as I'm sure you're well aware.

Also, with 50m WR and an acrylic crystal, I'm not sure I'd be inclined to describe this as a tool watch.
Then again, we may have completely different ideas about what one should withstand

Nice enough, but for that price a Seiko or Orient would be my choice (if I was in the market for a similar watch). I don't see Timex as a particularly cool brand though.

I like this one - and I'm a big fan of acrylic crystal!

As I love a so called “batman”, as with my Steinhart 500, plus having some spare cash from eBay sales (not watches, that’s later with a CW and a Hamtun up for grabs), I’ve taken the plunge.

One is arriving tomorrow, should be interesting.

Miyota movement, acrylic glass, loads of hype...nope doesn't do it for me and expensive for what it is. As someone else said Seiko, orient etc.. would be my choice at that sort of money.

M79 arrived today, so interesting in fact that it’s going back.

Looks nice but a couple of problems for me:-

Pictures on website don’t show how the bracelet tapers away, makes whole watch look unbalanced.
Bracelet rips the hairs out of my arm, and that was an ominous sign on first try.

No harm done, a returns label (Tracked 48) is included. I’m not putting on eBay even though there is £1 selling fees on eBay this weekend. But my collection should be nicely trimmed down by a couple of others at least.

The bracelet issue is the same as the Q. Perhaps the less weight of the Q makes it a bit more wearable. I have one waiting for me when I get home also (small matter of valentine dinner with the mrs. before I get to open it!
