WindUp NYC - A CW review

Post by albionphoto »

For those that don't know WindUp is a watch show hosted by Worn and Wound. It is held in October or November at Chelsea Market (between W15th and 16th, 9th Av, NYC). Chelsea market is an interesting place to visit if you're ever in NYC with lots of restaurants and interesting "artsy" shops. It's about a 20 minute walk from New York Penn Station.

Christopher Ward have attended before in 2015 when it was first held in Chelsea Market. At that time the CW stand was hosted by Wera and Declan. I bought my C11 Titanium Elite from them (I've sold this since, so don't ask). This time CW were a sponsor of the event and the booth was hosted by Chris Ward, Declan Strange, Olivia and Alex. For those who like a wristwatch check, Chris was wearing a C60 Apex on the hybrid strap, Alex was wearing a C60 Trident blue on blue and Olivia was wearing a C5 Malvern 595. I don't remember what Declan was wearing, sorry.

They had a range of watches on show including a C60 Apex, the new C60 Abyss, C65 Anthropocene (C65 white dialled GMT) and the C65 Black and Gold. The C60 Apex is a great watch. WindUp coincided with the arrival of my C60 Apex and I saw my first stranger wearing a CW. I'm not sure a watch show counts as a true encounter though. There was quite a lot of love for CW amongst the public at WindUp. The C60 Abyss was getting a lot of love as was the Worldtimer. I did look at the C65 Anthropocene but my attention was riveted to the C65 black and gold. Now I have another case of watch lust.

Amongst the other brands present were Monta, Oris, Spinnaker, Hamilton and Dan Henry.

The show was busy from its opening at 11:00 AM and by the time I left it was buzzing. I hope that CW have a good show and that WindUP helps them spearhead the American market for them.

The C60 Abyss is cool, the C65 Anthropocene is icy cool and the C65 Black and Gold is just amazing.

My next stop, in a very WIS weekend, is going to be Watch Time NYC so the C60 Apex should be a hit amongst the Armin Stroms A. Lange und Sohne, Breguets... I'll review Watch Time in the "Other Brands" forum.

That C65 Black and Gold looks rather similar to some of the FLE suggestions. That may sway some people one way or the other.

The resemblance is probably due to poor photography. The black and gold is a PVD coated bronze case. The accent ring and bezel edge are, in actual fact, a red gold colour. The back of the case is a gloss black. It's very stylish and dressy as the 6 and 12 numbers are also a red gold colour.

A good write up Mark, thanks.

I’m interested to see the two new C65s in more detail.

@albionphoto - Excellent write Mark and thanks for the pictures too.

Looks like an excellent event and wonderful to hear that you have been married up with your C60 Apex.

There were a good number of other brands there, both large and small, what else did you get the chance to look at?

White C65 GMT with black edged hands, they’re starting to learn about legibility

Thanks for the write-up, it sounded like a great event.

I’m keen to see both the C65’s more closely. On paper, the white faced GMT could be perfect for me, but I need that spark. I like the applied indices.

Look carefully, they're not black edged hands.

Standard steel finish. This is a better photo.

Other brands
Monta, Dan Henry, Junghans (they have some lovely watches), Stowa, Oris, Lorier, Brew Co. I think only the Junghans really stood out from the crowd though.

Thanks for the review, Mark. Looks like a really interesting event, and I’m sure UK members going to Bristol next Saturday will have a chance to see the new watches as well.

I'll add some pictures of the non-CW brands to a thread on the "Other Brands" section tomorrow. I have some more pictures of the C65 black and gold which I'll add here too.

I couldn't make the event this time, but I was there for the first one in 2015 with Wera and Declan.

Looks like a classier booth than we had for the first show.

Thanks for your report.

That looks very much like the the prototype that Mike was wearing at the Edinburgh GTG.
