Mr Jones? I had a look in their shop last week. Some really weird watches, although I rather like their day/night interpretation on a moonphase.

For later this afternoon/evening, a Tank Francaise..

Have you seen the new Black Dial version due soon, Guy? It looks smart.

A good 'tool' type watch with chunky design, 44mm case 200m WR, emulating the Industrial North East, where the Brand is based;-

Our first watch is inspired by Lord Armstrong - an inventor, engineer, scientist and businessman. Its design references the North’s industrial heritage with a heavy duty and rugged aesthetic - powered by a mechanical movement. The stainless steel is complimented by a leather strap and carry case suggestive of the role the beautiful and harsh landscape has played in the North’s history.

It's decently built and reasonably priced.

It has a resonance for me as I took my family summer holidays on the Northumberland Coast for many years, and visited Cragside, Lord Armstrong's home many times.

There is a simplicity to it i.e. bezel is fixed, and the grey/green colourway is unusual (again a like for me).

If you are thinking of getting one you need to be quick. I got an email a couple of days ago announcing a new Black dial version on bracelet and that the current Grey dial is no longer being produced; with only a few left in stock.

Food for thought?

Any particular meaning behind the "Pidduck" moniker?

Yep! Hanley is the city centre of Stoke-on-Trent, where I grew up. Henry Pidduck was the top jeweller in the city, when I was a child - very old established firm, and if you had something from Pidduck's you had definitely made the grade! I remember it like this, but sadly it closed in 1992.

On the same spot or very close there is now a modern building housing a very tawdry branch of Goldsmiths that doesn't seem to stock any of the big Swiss brands.

So, the Longines came up on Black Bough about 7 years ago, and I went for it. It's a 33mm watch in 18k gold with a beautiful hand wound movement. I had to have it.

Since my mother passed away in 2017 I haven't really been back to the area, so it's nice to keep the odd connexion.
