Being prototypes, that’s not the shape they’ll end up being will they??
Basically an elongated rectangle?

Surely not.
Not (too) daft but yes and yes, surely it is.

Perhaps I should have been clearer in my explanation. Mike France showed us a prototype at the Edinburgh GTG in January.

The boxes we saw, and I have photographed, on Saturday in Manchester are the real McCoy.

They are, very roughly, 40cm x 15cm x 10cm. The watch with strap lies flat, or with bracelet fits in the recess.

Make sense?

Moreover CW have intentionally waived their exclusivity rights on the new designs, methodologies, processes and approach to allow other Watch Manufacturers to take up on this eco-friendly packaging.

Did I miss the teaser pics for the new packaging?

Sorry just my stupid humour

Thanks Guy.
I’m just used to square boxes I guess.
Have only had square that’s all, think they look nicer imho.
Not a problem obviously.
Just, well odd to me.

Agree with watchpod. That’d be nice.

40cm ? I'm so amazed by that dimension that I had to check it on a tape measure - 3 times.
Is that considered to be the smallest size for secure and safe packaging? In inches that's nearly 16inches long x 6inches x 4inches. Why does it need to be 16inches long? Looks like there's a lot of wasted space at the ends of that box. Sure it looks nice and I'm not an expert in packaging but a padded travel pod within a smaller eco-friendly box would seem to me to be a preferred solution. And why increase the size of the accompanying booklets and other paperwork to fit the length of the box?

It's done now anyway but IMO a wasted opportunity to really be eco-friendly.

To me the most 'eco friendly' packaging is something that can be reusable, but thats about the sense of things these days I suppose - no sense! People go on about recycling, eco friendly etc.. but, when I was a kid, we used to have far better recycling than we do now - glass bottles that you returned and they got refilled, simple. A watch roll etc.. would be a useful item, far more useful, and eco friendly due to it being used, than something that looks like an old wooden pencil case.

+1

I also have to say waiving rights is all very well, but I suspect there will be little take-up from other manufacturers. The top brands feel the need to provide luxury packaging, the challenge is to do that sensibly while keeping a high standard. While I applaud CW for grasping the nettle, I can't see this iteration catching on - just my tu'pence.

I don't recycle my boxes. I keep them for a full set with paperwork.

Wouldn’t dream of throwing my boxes away.
Still don’t know what’s wrong with the current shape though.

I guess there are many different views on whether everyone is wowed by fondling a high quality box and how important it is in the overall package that it forms part of. :)

Strikes me that CW are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

It is rather a large box though. Perhaps the intention is to remove the contents and use it as a presentation box for a magnum of wine. A bit like reusing the old style Rolex boxes to store cigars.

Thanks, Mark, but it’s neither a new joke nor my joke. Good though!

The actual box size is 12" x 4" x 2 3/4 "

To quote Mike France...
The box is constructed from 95% bio-degradable materials, including laminated eco-MDF, cotton and bamboo
The polishing cloth and manuals will be the approx. 9 1/2" x 2 3/4" to fit easily within the box.

While I have no idea why this shape was chosen, it is a very nice box and will still present well upon arrival.

I applaud CW for taking this step. Will the rest of the industry follow, who knows, but it is not a bad idea at all. Yes a watchroll can be a good thing, but the vast majority of CW customers don't have "collections" so they would only add to the cost I am told, and still lie around unused. Itis also viewed that a watch roll would not afford as good a presentation and that is still part of the magic when purchased.

Thanks for the clarification Kip.

The box size you have given of 12" x 4" x 2 3/4 " translates into 30.5cm x 10cm x 7cm.

When I gave the measurements of 40cm x 15cm x 10cm earlier I did qualify them with "they are, very roughly". Perhaps they were a bit rougher than they should have been.

Moving on;-

I've been contacted by Chris Ward today and he mentioned that, at the GTG on Saturday, he had a conversation with someone who is after a C8 Regulator (he didn't specify MkI or MkII). In that discussion Chris said that they were all sold out.

Well? "One just turned up".

So if whoever it was talking with Chris reads this, if you'd like to get in contact with him by email to; chris.ward@christopherward.co.uk you might be in luck.
