Dreaded spinning rotor

Post by Bounce »

I haven't worn my Trident Vintage Pro for a couple of weeks, picked it up this morning & started to wind it & I could feel the rotor starting to spin.
I had this problem with an Oris a few years ago & had to send it back for repair.
I will wear it for a few days then let it run down & try to wind it again to see if it frees itself, but I don't hold out much hope, so it could be going back for a warranty repair as it is just under 2 years old. :(

I’ve had this happen with three of my watches. One broke and had to go back for repair because I persisted in winding it through the problem. The other two have ceased to exhibit the problem as I’ve been more gentle?

It's usually the reversing wheels getting gummed up - I don't understand it but apparently it's an easy fix. I've had it on a vintage auto but not on a modern one so far.

Recently had my Trident Pro for fixed for the same problem. It took around 5 weeks from sending it in to having it sent back.

'Repairs' on mine were limited to:

Reverse wheel cleaned and lubricated
Pallet fork cleaned and lubricated

The timing was also regulated and tested over 3 days. It's gone from gaining around 4 seconds a day to losing 6 seconds a day.

I understand it happens if the reversing wheels are not correctly lubricated in the first place.

It has happened to a couple of my watches, including a Trident which was sent back for repair to CW towers.

Noticed it on a couple of my watches.
My Trident GMT is the worst offender.
If I move the watch so that I'm directly looking at the face at eye level then I don't get the rotor spinning. I do this recently and it works fine.
I'll get it sorted when it goes for a service.

I know it is a pain sending it back, but what bothers me is it is running really well +3 secs a day which is fantastic for a non COSC watch & I can imagine it coming back a lot worse than that as Big Elf found.

Had an update from CW today, my Trident Pro will be repaired under warranty & will be with them for 5-6 weeks.
The repair will be done in Maidenhead & not sent back to Switzerland I was told.
I wait in anticipation.

Why do I feel I have the same issue with my trident GMT :?

I am gearing up to fix this myself and get experience in the process.
I have ordered Lubetta V105 which lubricates the reversing wheels.
Mobius 9010 and 9104
oilers
Naphtha (1st clean)
99.9% isopropyl alcohol (final rinse)
Method, open case, unscrew rotor (one screw), unscrew auto-wind assembly (two screws), turn assembly over and remove screw, take off plate, remove the four wheels (keep eye on how they fit together). Clean in Naphtha, rinse in alcohol, take the two reversing wheels and one at a time drop in V105 for 10 sec, take out and blow dry with hand blower. Lubricate post on autowind plate with 9104 (one small drop), replace wheels and plate, add screw, lubricate jewels, one drop with 9010. Screw back auto-wind assembly to movement, add rotor and screw. replace case back. all done.

I am wondering if the movement in the GMT that CW uses is a modified Eta/Sellita 2824 movement that the Trident Vintage uses with the same autowind gears etc, could explain the similar issue?
As I said it is the same issue that I had in my Oris Diver a few years ago, so a common problem that I am sure CW will sort out fine.

Options then are:
1) replace the reversing wheels

2) Replace the auto-wind assembly

3) Send it in to CW.

I presume your watch is out of warranty or you are overseas and don't want the hassle of returning it?

I had this problem with my C20 and, according to the paperwork that came back with the repaired watch, it required parts not just a clean and lubrication.

In any case, if you give it a go I would be interested to see stage by stage pictures if you are of a mind to.

Good luck.

Cheers,

Paul
