Swapping a Quartz for an Automatic?
Swapping a Quartz for an Automatic?
Hello,
I love my Trident 300 however i prefer an automatic movement. I was wondering if the 300 and 600 have the same case, and if so has anyone managed to swap the Ronda movement out for the Sellita SW200-1 or an ETA 2824-2?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Lorne

I'm sure this has been discussed before on here but somebody knowledgeable will be able to tell you.
Even if it could be done it'd probably be easier to sell the 300 and buy a 600 from CW or this forum once you have sufficient posts.

If I remember correctly, dial feet are in the wrong place, the case backs are different and you would need to be sure that the date wheels line up.

Welcome to the Forum, I would sell the 300 & buy a 600 or if you prefer find an old 300 Auto. A lot easier than the open heart surgery it would need.

Re: Swapping a Quartz for an Automatic?
As far as I know, the case dimensions are different. Quartz watches are generally thinner and so would not take an automatic movement.

The thickness difference can be catered for with a deeper case back, but it is a valid point!MarkingTime wrote:As far as I know, the case dimensions are different. Quartz watches are generally thinner and so would not take an automatic movement.

Re: Swapping a Quartz for an Automatic?
If the overall case size difference is simply due to the case back thickness, then it is do-able, I presume.
So swap movement and case back together? The only way to be sure, would be to ask CW, or try it.
Failing that, buy the auto and sell the quartz, no faff involved.

Re: Swapping a Quartz for an Automatic?
Certainly doable, but it's quite a lot of effort. You would also need to find a movement with a dial attached to avoid the issues I mentioned earlier, which then further complicated matters.MarkingTime wrote:If the overall case size difference is simply due to the case back thickness, then it is do-able, I presume.

Or.... Keep the quartz as a grab and go and get an auto too!

Hi,
It would present a lot of problems, as you would need to get a good movement, a dial and hands as none are interchangable on these watches from my knowledge of the movements.

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Re: Swapping a Quartz for an Automatic?
Hello,
Thankyou all for the replies, it's much appreciated. I had a suspicion the cases were different between the 300 and 600. I have swapped dials and bezels in my seikos but didn't know if it would be possible here.
I love my 300 so I think the best option, sadly, is to keep it.
(And then buy a 600 )

Re: Swapping a Quartz for an Automatic?
Though the question is generally answered, I'll put this here in case anyone else come across the thread. Even if they the two movements are the same diameter and height (unlikely on the height), the hand fittings, movement holder, and dial feet will be different. In other words, nope. I mean you could put an automatic movement in it with the right holder and removing/resetting the dial feet, but the hands won't fit, the diameters will be different on the Ronda vs the Sellita/ETA.
