Time / date adjustment

Post by josbrownlie »

Is it just me or does anybody else only adjust the time / date in the normal direction of change i.e. clockwise for the time, and date increasing numerically. I've just been watching a few videos on YouTube and noticed that some of them show time / the hands going backwards (anti clockwise) which horrified me. Am I alone in my time (and date for that matter) adjustment habits?

The answer I always give to this question...

Very generally speaking, a time only watch could be set in either direction. A watch with a date should never be set by rotating the hands counterclockwise. Your problem comes with the date mechanism. They are not designed to go in reverse and you risk permanent damage to the date mechanism by doing this.

It is best to always go forward when setting the time. This creates the proper habit in case your watch has a date or other complication that can be damaged by going backwards. A watchmaker is trained to do this to avoid potential problems.

There are some quick set dates that allow back and forward movements to set the date, but these are generally the exception.

For future reference, because many movements require different time frames to set dates, My method works for most movements and eliminates the guesswork.

My method....

How do I set or correct the time and date on my watch? (Always Clockwise)
You should always consult the owners manual for your watch but this method will work for most watches.
1. Set watch to 6:00 (no matter am/pm).
2. Set day/date to day before.
3. Turn hands until proper date appears (am) and then proceed to set proper time am or pm.

Ah yes the ever problematic issue of adjusting the time when the date change mechanism is engaging.

Also glad to hear I'm not on my own ....

Clockwise as a matter of habit.

Watches with date, just as Kip said.
Although I don’t set at 6 necessarily.
I adjust date for the day before then wind round clockwise till date clicks over then set time.

Depends on the watch/movement

My planet Ocean can be adjusted for both time and date in both directions.

The normal ETAs however I would only adjust clockwise.

Is that a calibre with the independent hour hand Nick? Great for travel as well as easy time & date setting.

That's true. Actually I think the original quartz c7 had this feature too!

Yes Nick.

The C7 MkI quartz had an independent hour, although I don't know that it was omnidirectional on adjustment.
