Sinn 104 RS

Post by gaf1958 »

Of the many watch brands that abound out and about in the world, one that I’ve never previously owned an example from is Sinn. Now that’s not for lack of want, but somehow, the esteemed German company had never ...quite... made a watch to make me want to part with my money. It’s been close, very close at times, but something always held me back; maybe it’s the infamous “soberness” of many of their models that made me find something, anything, just a little wanting in them, or maybe is just that I’m a flamboyant git that needs something a bit more “shouty” than Sinn seem prepared to make.

The closest I’ve come to buying a Sinn in recent years was with the white dialled version of the 104. The black 104 is lovely, albeit quite sober, but the white was a bit more fun. Yet still, I didn’t part with my cash... until two days ago, when I got wind of the RS version of the 104. No it’s not sponsored by Audi, the RS stands for Red Seconds - and it’s that little touch that tipped me over the edge. To give it its full title it’s the Sinn 104 ST SA I W RS Special Edition. And of course, I just had to get one on my favourite Sinn bracelet, the H-link.

I’m not going to go into any length with details of the watch; it’s simply a slight variation of a very well known model that is a limited/special edition of 200 sold only in Australia, Japan and the US. Other than a red seconds hand replacing the usual black one, that’s it. Oh, there are a couple of extra letters in the official name... Best thing is, it comes at a $0 premium over the standard version. Excellent!

Here ‘tis... a Sinn loud enough to do the trick.

Sinn - check
H-link bracelet- check
Bit bold, bit different- check
Day/date- check

Not that your watch has to conform to any of my checklists! But I love it

That pop of red is a really nice addition. Any chance we can get a lume shot?

That’s how to do a white dialled watch properly. A lovely piece indeed.

Love that watch so much, I think it's a classic. Personally I prefer it without the red seconds hand. The dial is perfection, just love the scrolling font used in 'Automatik'. I'd be curious to hear how you get on with the H-link bracelet? Some have said the buckle feels a bit cheap/pressed for such a well engineered watch. A lot of people love 'em, too. And of course, you get to experience the Sinn gold rotor through the display caseback, nice.

Hehe, I was wondering if it would appeal to you given your recent musings Lindsey. There’s also a black dial version if that appeals more...

The clasp mechanism is quite well built, but the clasp cover is a little thin yes. Not to it’s detriment though, that I can see. There’s often a fine line between making the clasp cover solid and making it too chunky - this one seems fine and is quite slimline due to the lightweight cover; but it doesn’t feel flimsy or tinny to me.

That does look very good, Gary, though white-dialled diver types are not for me.

Congratulations again! Will you be doing a SOTC anytime soon? :D

Excellent purchase Gary and I can appreciate that it suits you; size, white dial in a sunny climate, H link bracelet (simply different to the ubiquitous Oyster style).

I tried out a 104 some years ago in an AD, and concluded, simply, too small. Since then I've moved on and now have several of that style and size, albeit from different brands.

Ain't life strange.

Guy

PS> without checking, am I right in thinking Gary that this is not just your first Sinn, but also your first German watch?

There is something about a red seconds hand on a white dial... :D :D
