It baffles me why Omega chose to stick to the 50m WR on this new model. I know all the arguments about 50m being adequate / it's not a diver etc, but for many people, it seems 100m is a more reassuring WR for a daily wearer.

The technicalities of increasing the WR without significant case changes can't be that hard, can they?

Perhaps the hesalite crystal is somehow the constraint?

Omega themselves have made hesalite equipped dive watches with significantly higher WR ratings, so I’d have to guess that it’s not...

Maybe it's just carefulness with non screw down controls.

Bruce Williams was discussing WR on his channel the other day while reviewing his speedy and he had no issue with holding his speedy sapphire sandwich under a running tap to give it a clean. Some watchers were surprised he would do that. I really struggle to understand why even 30metres water resistance is not suitable for swimming pool activities. I wouldn't do it personally, but how can they really say it's 30 metres resistance if water gets in when you are out in the rain, or having a wash. 30 metres is 10 times any depth I've ever been.

Oh dear! Here we go with the water pressure arguments when moving etc.... Someone will be along soon to say that the movement of your wrist under the water in a washing up bowl creates the pressure of being 50m deep

Fortunately no pics available of me wearing the watch in the shower.

I am shocked by that Neil!
I always assumed you had staff to do that kind of thing!

Yeah. Definitely not the most convincing "look at my Speedy getting wet picture".

In the end, I can only assume that the determination to stick to 50m WR on the new Speedmaster is driven by marketing rather than engineering. That's a shame IMO.

^^^ I had owned the watch for over 3 years when I took the pic and hadn’t had the seals checked to ensure that they wouldn’t disintegrate, upon contact with water - so it was far higher risk than you imagine!

I think a reasonable compromise would have been to have gone for 50m on the hesalite and 100m the sapphire model.

Yeah, I wondered if they could have chosen different WR for hesalite (50m for "authenticity") and sapphire (100m because ffs it's the "tool" version).

I guess they never did that on the older versions so why start now...

Obviously, I lack the imagination to be a marketer. :D

It’s a strange one. I have long been coming round to the opinion that you should always go for the best WR you can.

Perhaps they don’t want to risk offending the purists.

I saw an unboxing of this yesterday, and there's a hidden price hike.

The mega-box including the 2 straps, the strap-tool, loupe and medallion is no more
The new box is a similar to the mega-box, but rather smaller, and no longer includes all the goodies. It now just includes a sort of removable watch pad that folds up into a travel case. I reckon that's removed a good few hundred value off the package, in addition to the general price increase. I can see the mega-box growing in value over the years. Some of the more specialised boxes seem to fetch a decent amount already. At least people try to sell them for a decent amount.

I like the new model but have no plans to ever "upgrade" from my 1861. Just got in 2019.

And good point about the box as well. That's a very cool add-on for the previous model and fun to have the loupe and everything else right from the manufacturer.

Wow. That is for sure a handsomely finished, handsomely equipped megabox. :D

You get my drift though?

A large box with just a travel pad in it is a large step down in quality.

Fully agree. Lots of people reckon the box is a waste of space, and it probably is. However, if it’s going to be a big box it should at least hold some worthwhile content.
