What once was lost...

Post by ajax87 »

... Is mine again!

I first really got into watches about 11 years ago. I was young, dumb-ish, and relatively penniless. But this Speedmaster really caught my eye. I was familiar with Omega, since my grandfather had left me his 60s Seamaster De Ville. So I treated myself! Not 6 months later, with the world economy in shambles, I sold it to pay rent. And kicked myself for it for the next 10 years.

Fast forward to last week. My wife of 5 years has heard the story of my long lost Omega many times. Apparently enough to have memorized the reference number and have been shopping for a good used one for a while. Long story short, she found one in excellent condition for a great price, brought me the details, and let me buy it!

This model isn’t apparently in high demand based on the resale pricing I’ve seen. But I love it. The 39mm case is perfect for my small wrist. Just happy to have it back in my collection. Thought I’d share it with you all. Have a great weekend!

That’s a really cool reference I’ve not seen before. What are the double hands on the 24hr dial for?

The arrow is a 24h hand (tied to the main hand I think, not GMT). The straight hand is the running seconds.

OP – a lovely watch and a great story.

Now don’t ever get parted from it again! [-X

The only thing that might bother me is that the black part of the date pointer appears to be solid and would obscure certain functions on certain days of the month.

Now that is a great story.

My wife tries to ignore everything that I tell her about watches.

I imagine that means both your watch and wife are keepers. :)

Great story and lovely pick up. Sounds like watches (or this particular one) is in your blood, so to speak. Congrats.

Well done Alex. I have some vague recollection of when you bought that first one. :)

This looks like an excellent example. I love the Mk40 Speedmasters, could easily be one's only watch without regret.

Your wife sounds like a good 'un too!

Thanks everyone!

Correct, the arrow is a 24hr hand tied to main hour hand. And I don’t think even if the date pointer was slotted it would be much help. Just a quirk of the watch that makes me appreciate it! This one will be a family heirloom.

Right! It was a while ago, but I recall me standing at the counter holding this up next to a more standard Speedmaster, and us both looking at this one going “huh, that’s interesting”.
Just before you got me into my first CW I think. Those were the days.

If it isn’t a model that’s in demand then gawd knows why! It is fabulous and a great size as well. Love it.
Many congratulations indeed
Cheers now, Paul

Well done, both on the watch front and choice of spouse!
I have a similar story, but it was just an early CW, yours is a step or two up from there. Congratulations!

There is alot to like in that watch! Great size, 24 hour hand, and a pointer date with a flightmaster style hand. Certainly a unique Speedy. Wear it with pride, and never let it go!

Lovely story and what a great watch, only exceeded by an even greater wife (you're a lucky man).

That's an interesting version of the Speedy, definitely more wearable for the smaller wrist than the standard 42mm and also I like that it is subtly different and some extra complications, such as the day-date.
