New (to me) Seamaster Professional

Post by jtc »

I've wanted to add one of these "pre-Bond" Seamasters to the collection for some time - I feel it's one of those classic watches that will stand the test of time. Recently my ebay saved search has included a few examples that whet my appetite but none that enticed me to pull the trigger.

If you know much about this particular Seamaster, you'll know they have an aluminium bezel and were sold for a few years, but have long been discontinued. Used models tend to either have no original box/paperwork, have scratched bezels, wear to the case or desk diving wear to the bracelet. It's incredibly hard to find a used example that's been treated with care by a collector.

Originally available for circa £1k in the early noughties, examples on the used market now tend to go for far more than that, sometimes double, complete with visible wear and other marks commensurate with age. A quick scan of chrono24 shows examples from across the globe at a huge variety of prices and condition.

I posted a WTB last week and, by chance, also found possibly one of the only mint "like new" models for sale through a London dealer the same day. A quick click of "buy" was done, without sparing a thought for deal making, and it arrived today!

It is absolutely mint and unmarked, sized perfectly for my wrist already, plus even has the original purchaser's receipt from 2004 included with the standard documents. If it was worn since then, it must have been sparingly and on a strap as the bracelet is almost new.

I'm a happy new owner and it'll be staying in the collection for years to come.

That is a great looking watch Jon, a classic Omega. As you say it looks like new considering it dates from 2004, even the B & P look pristine too.

I've been down the Seamaster Professional road myself today.

Congratulations Jon.

I had a bit of a double take when I saw how quickly your WTB was sorted - at the same time I saw another minty one go for sale and then OHPF almost immediately on another forum and wondered if it was you bagging it. :)

Both these and Bond seamasters are classics. Good work.

A classic Seamaster indeed. Sword hands, thin case, bold indices, wavy dial - i.e. one of the best Seamasters. Congrats on finding one almost like new.

Looks great! I prefer the non-skeleton hands on the professional. I've had mine for over ten years and she ain't going nowhere !

Enjoy!

Right up my alley..another fine example of wrist wear to add to my short list!!..

I've taken this week off work to do things round the house. My problem now is I'm too scared to wear it and admire it, because I've found such a mint example!

Maybe I'll switch to a fabric strap to at least ensure the bracelet remains unscuffed....

Congratulations on a great purchase Jon. These (and the electric blue variant) are definitely my favourite of the early SMPs (over time, I’ve owned about six or eight of them).

Yours certainly looks to be a beautiful example - they are getting on a bit now and finding one in great condition like that is a definite bonus, so well done there. You’ll love the fantastic lume and may well end up using it as a benchmark for every other watch.

I must admit when I read your first post describing a pre-Bond SMP, that I was expecting to find an SMP 200, not the sword handed model. Yours is actually a later model than the “Bond”- but Omega did go back to the skeleton hands introduced with the Bond at a later date, keeping the sword handed SMPs (as yours is generally referred to) somewhat more exclusive (well, relatively); keeping used prices for these keener, as they have quite a following.

This one of mine is what is usually referred to as a pre-Bond:

Ah, good educating, thanks - I'd just seen the (what I thought to be later Bond era hands) on newer SMPs and assumed!

The lume is certainly on a par with the Pelagos. I must have a (desk) diver problem
