Contentious Copycat
Contentious Copycat
I've seen CW copycats on the forum before but not sure if the C65 was featured. What disappointments me the most, though, is the lost opportunity to redesign the 9 o'clock logo.

Re: Contentious Copycat
They even left the 'Christopher Ward' logo on some of the website photos! Also left the Trident on the caseback and logo on the crown
The crystal is also both sapphire and mineral glass. Schrodinger's watch!
Would love to see one in the flesh and compare. My guess is that it would be total and utter tat!

Loathsome tat. This type of activity by various companies that take another firms watch and just brazenly stick another logo on it is beyond contempt.
There are numerous other watches that one seems able to buy where we would all recognise the origin. Dartmouth anyone?
From the specs, it seems it has a date and a Japanese Swiss movement. Neil

Re: Contentious Copycat
Aye. If there’s no design input at all then all they’re doing is manufacturing tat. I guess there’s money to be made. Steinhart seem quite popular. I own an explorer ‘homage’ just for full disclosure!
But if you produce an item that you take no interest in then i’m not interested. If you can’t be bothered to do anything more than manufacture tat then I can’t be bothered either. Short cuts don’t make valuable things.
watching you fail in your quest for a “one watch” has been great entertainment

Re: Contentious Copycat
This is just stock images, They haven't actually produced any, they wait untill someone orders at least 300 pieces and then they will produce. And im sure it will be rubbish.

Re: Contentious Copycat
Gosh they've even "borrowed" CW images and Photoshopped alternative logos and such. I "get" the Steinhart thing and it has a place when something is effectively unobtainable, and is at least a decent watch. But none of this can be said of a Chinese CW.

I bet chris and the original management team will have a little snigger and even be a bit pleased with themselves that cw watches are now in the position where they are being snided! I bet a dozen years ago they didn’t think this would happen!
Cheers now, Paul

No shame at all. But Paul you are right in that as the saying goes, "imitation is the greatest form of flattery " or something like that.

You see the same thing with fake guitars coming out of China. Musicians jokingly refer to them as Chibsons!
Can someone tell me what “tat” means?

While not exactly a copycat, is this one merely an homage.

Re: Contentious Copycat
Merchandise of inferior quality, usually but not always sold cheaply. May be related to the adjective tatty, but I suspect that the widespread use of the noun is more modern and may in fact be derived from the adjective, unless it is from something like Middle English.
Update: originally spelt TATT, it meant a rag and developed by extension into meaning something worthless. Struggling to find a first recorded date for it, but TATTERS, TATT’RING and TATTER’D were known in Shakespeare’s time.

Re: Contentious Copycat
When we are holiday in seaside resorts [pauses to wistfully remember such occurrences from a by-gone world] and see the shops selling rip-off fake-branded clothes, trinkets, souvenirs, postcards, etc we always refer to them as "tat shops". Not sure if it's just us or a more widely used term.
