A grand seiko I actually like!

Post by stefs »

I usually find the grand seiko watches to be just a little understated and for all the wonderful finishing and build qualty they just have not been able to float me boat.

However this one is a bit tasty. Titanium spring drive from the four seasons editions. This one is spring.
Just look at the dial....

Although that particular one doesn't float my boat, I must admit I've been starting to think a spring-drive GS could be a welcome addition to my box. Just got to find the right one - at the right price.

Grand Seiko make some fabulous watches
Very much, imo, a watch collectors watch.

That's a lovely dial albeit it has a certain resemblance to a 1970's Artex ceiling

This one is rather nice too :D

I admire a lot of the modern Grand Seiko watches but I do wish they would rediscover lumed hands.

Absolutely agree. That's one of my issues with most GS - although this one had lume...

Paul that one is certainly a beauty. My favourite style of GS case, even more so than those that use a 44GS case.

GS are absolutely stunning watches and excellent value for money in the mid tier price point!
Also feel that they have a ton of momentum currently and the pre-owned prices are just beginning to reflect that.

The dial on that watch is amazing. I do really like a lot of the GS models.

The one thing I struggle with is the PR, I'm just not sure if I could live with it interrupting the balance of the dial, useful complication that it is.

That's a beauty, Paul. But I'd have to check how it glinted with sunlight or other direct light on it. That could possibly change the appearance significantly, maybe for the better, but possibly detrimentally too.

It still takes a lot to beat the Snowflake though - even though I sold mine earlier this year. :(

I never had an issue with the PR dial though. You'd think it would be a distraction, but actually it never was. It was more of a signature element and I was always interested to read where the PR level was at any point in time.

Steve’s aforementioned Snowflake has become a solid favourite of mine and I couldn’t agree more with his judgement on the PR, which had been a small concern for me too before handling one. The build quality and finish that stefs mentions is everything it is claimed to be but the accuracy is better than Seiko say, mine tends to be out by about a second a day! I find myself staring at the flow of the second hand, the dial and the finish more than is probably natural.
I have to say the dial on the one posted by stefs is not my favourite but there are a few to choose from, especially if you can find one of the limited editions. I also remember hankering after the quartz diver Richard pictured so beautifully above, the lack of date put me off a bit though. Here’s a closer view of today’s wear.

The Grand Seiko Sports Collection watches have lumed hands, with a couple of exceptions. I don't think any of the Elegance or Heritage collection do though.

Thanks, pinched my wife’s phone!
I really cannot speak highly enough of it and I cannot see what would possible replace it in the collection.

I had a Eureka moment with a GS a few weeks ago, an SBGA283, which is the smallest of the Spring Drives. In Sydney's GS Boutique, it hugged my wrist like it didn't want to let go and just smiled at me. Can a watch really do that? Anyhow, the Spring Drive is the THING for me, that second hand, gosh. But most of them are just that bit big for me. And then the world spun in reverse on its axis....

Same day I'd been to the city Rolex AD and nothing there so much as made a peep at me, never mind a smile. My wallet is glad of that though :)
