Favourite watch buy of 2019

Post by Alex r »

For me I only had 1 incoming this year and it's the first for a while.
The BB36 has become one of a 2 part mini collection within the group and is my go too watch outside of work. It's not a watch that photos well or I'm just rubbish, looks far better in the real world.

Old photo but one of the better ones.

Was a tough choice, but the Aquis gets the nod purely because it's been most worn since purchasing ...

I'm having to break down my response into 3 categories..the first is a 'Great Buy at a Higher Price Point'..and that would be my Seiko GS SSBGA387(#364 of 558) for $4,750.00 that I picked up in late January..after the seller had had it for a couple of weeks, he thought it was too 'bright' ..
Seiko Grand Seiko SBGA387 SD 9R65 44GS #364of558(1).JPG
The second category for me is 'Biggest Pleasant Surprise After Arrival'...I was shopping for a Credor on a Japanese watch site when I came upon this Oris Divers 65 Bronze Bezel going on sale for about $1,075 slightly used..I've liked it so much since then that I've bought 2 other Oris Divers 65 BBs and prefer their looks to my more expensive(but still nice)Tudor BB 58..
Oris Diver 65 Sellita SW 200-1(2).JPG
And my last category is 'Watch lying Lowest Under the Radar'..as a collector of Ebels, I've grown accustomed to collecting watches that most others wouldn't give a second glance to..it was just by accident that I stumbled across a reply to a WUS post about the Steinhart Ocean 39 Vintage GMT..the poster said 'Well, how about the Hong Kong LE?'...I checked it out and after thinking about it for a few days, I ordered it..I understand people aren't overwhelmed by it just yet(maybe never?), but this is one of the great affordable opportunities still out there for collectors, IMO..beautiful ceramic bezel that is easy to turn, high grade/nicely finished movement, comfortable size, classy, understated appearance..

And currently on a tan canvas strap..

Ebels are a lot like women that lack a lowcut dress that zips up the side..neither gets the love that they deserve..

Same here. Ogled a few nice things at Bristol and bought a QR bracelet for the C65, but no real desire to augment the flock.

I’ve had three watches arrive this year, the first was a Bremont S301 which I found at a great price via the bargain hunters thread. I wore it for about 6-7 months and then sold it for what I originally paid when I fell out of love with it.

Second was the MK3 trident I won in the forum competition. I wear this a lot and love the watch, but it doesn’t make the choice as my favourite.

That honour goes to my Bremont Alt-ZT which I purchased with the funds from the sale of my other Bremont (plus a little extra, but don’t tell Mrs Iain)

I had multiple incoming this year (more than anticipated ) so I can't say which one is the single most favourite buy this year. Top 2 are the ones below. I will update my SOTC and review the 2019 journey over the Christmas holidays.

For me it probably has to be the BBR bought second-hand from another forum. I'm very conscious that they appear a bit 'me too' and seem to have a tedious omni-presence on the high street but at the end of the day it's well made, well performing, handsome and fits a broad range of scenarios. My only complaint is that I can't find a good fit with the bracelet although the watch wears many straps well.
