My next icon is generic rather than specific. It is what we might refer to as the “Little Gold Watch”, in a differential nod to the “Little Black Dress”.

Nowadays we would refer to them as vintage dress watches. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, these were just men’s watches. I have a great fondness for them because I remember that pretty much every watch I saw was a bit like these when I was growing up.

Every manufacturer of the day made something in the style, though there was obviously considerable diversity in case material and quality of movement and workmanship.

I guess for most people the epitome of desirability in this genre is the Patek-Philippe Calatrava.

I have always been slightly keener on the offerings from Vacheron-Constantin.

There are also some very fine watches by JLC and Rolex, not to mention the great Piaget Altiplano.

My own examples are a little more humble, but I’m very fond of them.

My one and only little gold watch. Hidden lugs and rather unique arched crystal. Relegated to weddings and such, but fully serviced, keeping perfect time.

Time and money? I’ve spent most of mine on booze and women. The rest I just wasted…
