Apologies if people already knew this, but I’ve just seen it. This kind of stuff really does make me cringe.

Re: Bremont goes Varsity
That’s probably quite right. At least there is the compensation that they are decent watches, and therefore reassuringly expensive.
I’ve never really been interested in Bremont, but if I were I don’t think the University crest on the dial would be the thing that would attract me.

What about it makes you cringe? And I don’t ask because I don’t understand, but because there are so many things about this over which one might cringe! So which particular thing gets your goat?
My alma mater offers branded watches. I just shake my head at it. At least these are nice watches and not simply a cheap fashion watch.

Just plain naff in IMHO. The Japanese will.love them and if it makes money then good luck to Bremont. Only tourists buy University of Oxford or Cambridge tee shirts etc. Any varsity person of my acquaintance would only wear stuff signifying their college, if at all.

Nothing about this, that I can see, on the Bremont website. But the Oxbridge Watches website is of the same ilk as Bremonts. Seems like some branded watches have been commissioned from Bremont, the same as anyone can do, and are being sold via this website.

At Oxford and Cambridge, because they are collegiate universities, one's allegiance is more to the college. When I was an undergraduate in the '70s lots of people wore a college scarf in the style of the time, thrown over one shoulder. College ties and blazer badges were OK, but sporting and university club ones were much smarter. College enamelled cufflinks, no. I still have a couple of ties but haven't worn them for years.
Anything Varsity was considered a bit naff, as Galton says, for the tourists. Varsity watches would definitely have been beyond the pale. I remember one fresher who poled up wearing an Oxford University sweatshirt - he didn't wear it for long.

Some items require proof of being an Alum. More fool them (the real ones) if they do splash the cash. Tourist trash I’m afraid Bremont.
