New Omega releases, inc SS 50th anniversary Speedmaster

Post by nbg » Fri May 17, 2019 8:48 am

For those that haven’t already picked up on this.

The Speedmaster would have been better if they hadn’t ruined the left hand sub dial.

Hmm. Can't get excited about the Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th. However, a bit further down the page, this one caught my eye:

I imagine that the Apollo 11 50th LE of 6969 will be a test of just how lucrative to Omega the whole moon connection is. Setting aside the new movement, the best part to me is the bracelet.

As a watch, I much prefer the Speedmaster LE of 3557 that was released as part of the 60th trilogy. That’s still kicking around ADs here and there and available preowned at a discount.

I know. :D

I have been avoiding all the usual Basel hype etc because I genuinely want to downsize. However, (as you know) it's not easy.

Gaudy, Brash, Blingy.

And yet again Omega let the general buying public down on such a worldwide event by offering 6969 of the Moon Landing watch at close to £8k.

Disappointing and disappointed.

I know!

Within the last week or so, I have gone through sell many and buy a VC Overseas, or sell many and stick the money in the bank.

Probably take the easy option ask an AD for the new version BLNR and justify not selling, because it’s like money in the bank. :)

In this company I think I have to doubt my taste or personal aesthetic. I kind of liked the 50th anniversary moonwatch. However I'd rather buy a pukka moonwatch that says "Flight qualified by NASA" on the back. I am impressed that they have revised the movement again. The 3861 movement does sound like a good upgrade.
The orange PO could be fun. Not that an Omega is on my list right now.
Buying a moonwatch on the 50th anniversary feels like getting engaged on February 14th. A bit too cliche. I'm still sulking about Omegas' price increase in the US (about 8%). I'm glad I bought my Ref 210 Seamaster at the old price not the new one.

Still there are plenty of other decent Omega models available at a decent price. The other day I saw someone selling a month old current model 39.5mm Planet Ocean that has an RRP of £5k for £3k.

Mind you those of us on watch forums live in a bubble. I would suggest that the general buying public would typically spend less than £500 on a watch and if you stuck a Speedmaster In front of them would have no clue that it’s generally considered a must try watch by WIS.

I'm with Neil, really like the braclet. The watch is a great tribute piece and a nice thing to look at, but I can't imagine ever actually wearing the thing.

Don’t worry if you don’t like it, guys...I can guarantee that 6969 people WILL, even at £7k+.

Me? Sticking with the Moonwatch. I’m fine.

I agree Steve, but how many will buy it to wear and how many will buy it for their Collection and it will remain in its box (in a safe)?

For me, I'm unlikely to buy but I do like the Commemorative Moonwatch and I do like the white / orange PO.

Other models I'm not so sure about.

Can we all agree that the "real" 50th anniversary Speedy is the 321 reissue? I do like the new bracelet, but the 50th anniversary should have had a 321 movement and Hesalite. As for the 9 o'clock subdial, my mother told me that I you can't say anything nice... The 11 marker is a nice subtle touch. They could have paired that with a 50 marker on the 9 o'clock subdial, commemorative back and that bracelet, and had something tasteful, subtle and attractive. Instead we have the Omega Speedmaster Hublot Edition.
