Giugario Glass, I see...

Post by StrapMeister » Sun Mar 17, 2019 6:52 pm

A while ago, I was quite taken by some pictures that were posted by Gary (gaf1958) of a couple of Seiko’s....the hunt commenced and I was lucky enough to pick-up a couple of Seiko Giugarios…

An orange/blue variant:

A black variant:

The orange/blue variant was mint condition being that it was New Old Stock and came with all the stickers still on it.

The black variant, however, was a second-hand buy. It was advertised with scratches to the glass but the rest of the watch looked in pretty good, working condition so I decided to take a punt.
Well the glass was, after closer inspection, actually quite scratched

So the research commenced...
I found out that this was Hardlex crystal and very, very difficult to polish. I certainly didn’t feel comfortable trying to do it without having a replacement at the ready.
So the hunt was on for a replacement. First up I managed to eventually find what the OEM part number was (this is a great resource: https://boley.de/en/case-parts/seiko/4300)

Next up was to actually try and find one for sale = hens teeth!
I eventually tracked one down (which was the only one I could find for sale in the world) from a Watch Repairer/Jewellers in Israel of all places!
Having purchased the replacement glass, it turned up and I was straight on the phone to my friendly watch repairers (Wiltshire Watches - https://wiltshirewatches.co.uk/). I popped over with the watch and glass and left it with them.
They fitted the new glass and battery for the sum total of £10
I picked it up yesterday and couldn’t be happier :D

£10 including fitting a new capacitor?

It looks like a 5M4x movement and the cheapest capacitor for that movement I could find for mine cost more than that alone...

EDIT: I was wrong - it was just the replacement of the glass.

The guys at Wiltshire Watches are really passionate and very knowledgable about/with their watches.
I've been, imo, lucky enough to find to them by pure chance and what's more they're just up the road from me.
Everytime I go there, it's at least an hour chit chatting :D

Well done Nigel, I know they’re pretty damned hard to get hold of. A friend of mine has one and he had the domed hardlex crystal replaced with a flat sapphire, which, while scratch resistant, doesn’t quite fit the organic look as well...

And because I absolutely love these watches but also just because I can, here are some pics of mine... orange, green and black... The black is a bit of a beater (but surprisingly without scratches in the crystal); the other two are like new .

Very nice Gary
It was your set and terrific photography that inspired me to getting them.
They are great watches and so unusual :D
I'm just missing the green version myself albeit I have seen a couple for sale but they have been a bit pricey.

I have just noticed that the second hand on the black version is acting strange :?
It's ticking 2 seconds then pausing, 2 seconds then pausing,..
A bit of a weird one but I suspect this means that the capacitor needs changing, so I've just bought part no.: 30235MZ (capacitor and battery).
