Expensive ETA

Post by HendrixGreen »

Hi,

Having recently got a Tudor BB58, I'm toying with the idea of selling my Breitling Super Ocean II 36mm and going for a Tudor Heritage 36mm (getting an explorer feel)...

https://www.tudorwatch.com/watches/blac ... 79580-0001

This watch comes with an ETA 2824 (albeit modified I assume), so for £2000 its very expensive, appreciating all the obvious stuff, build quality, brand etc.. I picked up a Steinhart Ocean One (same kind of movement) for just over a 10th of the price. I know this isn't apples for apples.

Any one got a view?

Cheers
H

A Schofield with the same ETA2824 will set you back in excess of £3k.

My original Black Bay is an ETA, Bremont based on ETA, IWC have ETA movements (I believe downers has an ETA in it). There are many more that could be mentioned. I don’t see the issue, but a lot of ‘WIS snobs’ look down their nose at them. I prefer ETA/Selitta base due to cheaper and easier servicing/repairs etc.. If you like it go for it, it’s a tried and tested workhorse of a movement. As always, only my opinion/thoughts.

I too have an ETA black bay. In general the ETA’s have probably held their value at least as well as the newer IHM BB’s so I don’t see it as much of an issue.

From a collecting point of view I do like "differentiated" movements as a criterion. Nowt wrong with ETA but having a plethora of watches all based on an identical movement would be somewhat humdrum IMHO. Unique inhouse movements thus rank highly, speaking for myself - but I tend to be parsimonious about paying for them! And they will cost more to maintain while probably requiring specialist attention.

Without doubt! It's still a great watch though.
