Draken Kalahari

Post by nigelb001 »

Draken hasn't been on my radar before, though I've seen one or two on here. They have a new watch coming up on Kickstarter in July and it looks to be up my street. I've been keeping my eye out for a pale dialled watch, not white or silver, so the rich cream dial/black PVD version of this made me sit up. https://drakenwatches.com/blog/announce ... -are-here/

Specs. are:
Multi-layered dial with Swiss Superluminova C3
Custom made skeletonised hands
Luminous date disk
Loading bar power reserve indicator
Internal rotating GMT bezel
Lumed crowns
Textured bezel
Moulded and painted case back.
Sapphire crystal with AR coating
New premium Seiko NE57 movement
44mm with 22mm lugs (I think)

Come July I may well sign up for this :D

I like that, particularly the cream dial. If it’s like their earlier Peregrine, they’ll probably offer that dial in the stainless case as well, which could be one that tempts me.

I tried to find out some info on the Seiko/TMI NE57 movement, but other than being listed as a “premium” movement, I could find very little.

@gaf1958 - yes. There will be a cream dial, which is full lume by the way, with the steel case.

Bit like a CWL C8 (except for the lume).

I'm really liking the serrated bezel feature.

One of these is definitely on my radar to join my Draken Tugela and Peregrine.

Worth mentioning that we are now in July and, as per Draken's posts on Facebook, the Kalahari is due for release imminently.

Hadn't noticed this thread first time round. I have to say the cream dialled Kalahari looks very good with some really nice features such as the date wheel, power reserve bar and lumed dial....I've just seen photos of the lumed dial and it looks amazing. $450 seems a decent price for a watch of this spec too, the only downside I can see is the 44mm size which is probably too large for me.

Sorry to hear you missed the early bird, Nigel, but glad to hear you backed it anyway.

I managed to get in as backer #14. Now to decide which variant to get.

For anyone interested, the Kickstarter campaign is here

I want to like it, it piqued my interest initially, but it's not doing it for me. There's something toy-ish about it IMO, the case design especially lends to that feeling. A lot of empty space opposite the power-reserve on the central circle, why not put the logo or a model motif?

It will be interesting to see this when it arrives Guy, and also see how the new movement performs.

Not my cup of tea, but I can see why it is popular.

Logo is on the crown and caseback, with the brand name on the case side (9 o'clock).

Draken considered putting the brand on the dial but decided not to; wanted to be distinctive (info from their development updates / blog).
