rgb wrote:FWIW, there is a Memomatic on ebay right now with 11 hours left. 19 bids, $405 so far. Its the grey dial/orange highlight model. 'Seamaster' is not on the dial. Needs cleaning, but a darn attractive vintage piece. Seller is in Uruguay.

I don't think that model had 'Seamaster' on the dial.

No idea if this is genuine or not but do you not get a lot of frankens and fakes coming out of Uruguay?

Hi everyone, I am lucky enough to have inherited a 1969 Omega memomatic (of the orange dial variety). I love the watch as it is so of its time. I have just taken it to Somlo Vintage Omega in London and they have quoted me £720 for service and a new clasp.

Is this reasonable to you guys? Would really appreciate any advice as I do not have experience in this area.

Thanks,

Alex

Doesn't sound reasonable to me. Is there alot of case work to be done? Can't the clasp be fixed?
I miss all the great things that may never be.

A new clasp alone can set you back a couple of hundred pounds. A service can set you back a few hundred too.

Can you post pictures?

Omega has quite the variety of service prices and much depends on the age of the watch and caliber. Add to that the clasp and I would bet the price is pretty close to their sheet price for vintage.

You may wish to investigate another independent dealer.

I suspect you could get it done cheaper than Burlington Arcade prices!

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures - it works, although it doesn't wind up enough to last overnight, also the alarm has a tendency to go off at random times, probably causing the watch to unwind a lose power.

I was under the impression that official omega vintage repairs was 'not a profit centre' and as such even Burlington Arcade would not rip me off?

I would really like to get it done by omega, so suspect there is no cheaper way?

Thanks!

Send an email to Christian (watchguy.co.uk), or his pal Mitka (mitka.co.uk). Both are highly respected on the Omega forum and specialise in vintage watches.

Edit - didn’t spot this was a resurrection. Was going to delete this but decided not to because the chaps above are worth talking to for vintage work.

Jimbo, are your Memostars the same as the one I posted on Page 1? The Blue TV dial is the only style I have seen, but I wonder if Memostar made other alarm watches. Mine doesn't get a lot of wear, but it still fascinates me, and is certainly an attention-getter with the very 1970's TV dial.

Hi Lavaine, sorry for the delay in replying .

Yes my two are also blue faced/dial. i know very little about them other than i read somewhere that either the RAC or AA had a load made....for what reason I have no clue. One of mine is in very good condition for it's age, the other is not so good, but works, and the wind up crown is not original. i even have a box for one of them. cheers Jimbo
