Adjusting a screw in bracelet

Post by missF »

My Elliot Brown Kimmeridge has arrived! It's lovely. Pics later once I can adjust the bracelet.....

The watch comes with a jeweller's screwdriver for adjusting the bracelet, but try as I might I can't get the screw to budge, and I'm risking stripping the screw head. It says in the booklet that the screws have some kind of thread locking compound on them. So my question is = is there a way of getting rid of this compound so I can safely unscrew the screws??

Thanks!

Soak the bracelet in hot tap water for about 5 minutes. That will usually soften the thread lock enough to allow removal. Possible you may have to repeat a couple times.

Don't use Christmas cracker screwdrivers. They're not perfect for watches. Apparently.

I bought a Davidoff watch that had this problem. I got a jeweller to remove all the screws which were all threadlocked. (I actually used an excellent watch strap seller on my local market). Coincidentally, I also saw a Jennie Elle video about an omega this week with the same issue, and she had to use a jeweller as well.

I would get a jeweller to undo all your screws once and for all. It's especially hard if your bracelet has screws on both sides, as you need two screwdrivers, a special tool, and a third hand!

Good luck.

Here's a picture of the screws and links that didn't go back in with my watch It's hard to see but there's a lot of whitish compound still in the screw grooves. The screws still work fine. My focus is very slightly off/slight camera shake.

^^ thanks for that good advice
I found with the screw in bars that one of them was just impossible, but I managed to unscrew the adjacent ones. I got the size adjusted, I'm now back with a regular spring bar where there's a half link adjust at the clasp. It's proving intransigent..... :silent:

I didn't think you could be old enough so maybe you're just boasting now    :D

Did you manage to break through the thread locking solution?

Is yours the type of watch which has screw heads at both sides of the links and yet the manufacturer supplies one driver when what you need is two?

^^^

Success! Almost......

There is only a screw head on one side of the bracelet - my shaky hands definitely couldn't cope with a screwdriver on each side....
I got through the thread locking solution on all but one of the screws.
I also adjusted the half link adjustment on one side of the clasp.

I now find I need the half link adjustment on the other side to make it fit better.....

What I really need is somewhere I can write all this down and vent while I go..... (Oh... )

Well done Lindsey. I hope your screwdrivers survived. It's the sort of thing that makes you appreciate a Bergeon despite the price. I have a 1.6mm Bergeon which has given me great service, unlike some less expensive ones. :D

Why on earth do people think they need loctite on bracelet screws. And why doesn't everyone make quick release bracelets and straps.

Now, for your next experience in frustration, try sizing a bracelet with pins and collars. CW with these, to the dark side they went. ](*,)
