Chess

Post by JAFO »

Any chess enthusiasts.

I have been watching a few matches in the Fide World Cup this week on Chess 24.

Isn't it funny how everyone seems to collapse against Magnus Carlsen when it comes to the blitz time limits?

It's also funny how badly I play in comparison. They measure it all in micro-pawns now. My moves (some of) are slightly sub-optimal (blunders apart) by a few micro-pawns, and their moves aren't, and the end result is the small gains add together to form an easy win.

When I went for a job interview in 1972 I was asked what my hobbies were.

I should have said football but being a cocky 19 year old I said chess looking to impress the interviewers.

One of the interviewers hadn't said a word at all. Looking at me steely eyed he asked me to describe the Sicilian Defence. Having never played chess in my life I ummed and ahhed before falling completely silent.

Strangely I did not get that job.

Funny what used to happen in selection interviews before 'ooman resources got involved. I was asked once about golf (same thing: hobbies etc) Asked which club I'd use for blah blah so I told them. Told them where I played and what handicap I played off. Asked him what he played off and where he played too. Didn't want that job.

Started to play chess this year at the ripe old of 67 - never played before. Quite like it.

I play with my friend, via a phone app.
We've been playing for years, but honestly, we are both very poor players.
But we're evenly matched so it makes for some very interesting games.

The Queen's Gambit on TV was apparently very good.

It was exceptionally good!

I’m terrible at chess. I have no patience for any games involving strategy.

I used to play a bit but was never very good. I always preferred bridge and got quite good at that, but haven’t played for years.

I like to think my best game is Cribbage, although I only ever play against a computer.
I did play against a human about 20 years ago, he was apparently a top player in the Kent League.
I beat him regularly, but obviously it's not a game of pure skill like chess.
Backgammon is another favourite of mine.

Funnily enough I just started teaching my daughter how to play chess today. I expect she will be beating me shortly!

I too like cribbage but rarely find anyone to play against. I also am quite partial to Scrabble but, again, rarely get to play. My Mother In Law runs a Scrabble club and gets most annoyed as I tend to beat her 9 times out of 10.😎

I have played quite a bit, although in a very amateur sense, never bothering with notation and books on strategy. I think it's probably a game that people would benefit from picking up later in life, it keeps the brain very elastic and probably fires some synapses that don't often see the light of day.
