Where do you get your watch knowledge from?

Post by missF »

Do you read online? Which sites? Books, magazines? Which titles? Do you get information emailed from watch manufacturers?

And how do you learn? Do you have a daily routine of reading about watches? Do you read everything you can find or just dip in and out if there’s a watch that interests you?

Ok - that’s plenty questions to be going on with!

Which sites? Usually ones linked here on the forum - Hodinkee / W&W etc.

Books, magazines? Some books, occasional magazines

Which titles? I've had quite a few books and occasionally bought a mag like 00/24 at Liverpool Street while waiting for a train, or at the airport. Books tend to be the coffee-table sort like my history of the Tank.

Do you get information emailed from watch manufacturers? Only Cartier and CW

And how do you learn? I just read stuff and if I'm interested it sticks

Do you have a daily routine of reading about watches? Absolutely not

Do you read everything you can find...Absolutely not

...or just dip in and out if there’s a watch that interests you? More likely

Ok - that’s plenty questions to be going on with!

This forum has been my primary source of watch info. Any online sources were typically discovered through this forum. I treat the forum as my clearing house and set off in different directions based on where this forum points me.

Thanks for kicking off Steve.
My ability to read great amounts of info is pretty small these days, but i’d Like to get back into reading a bit more about watches. Hopefully this thread can send us all in some interesting directions

I’d say that that’s currently pretty much my way of doing things

Great questions. Although I’ve been a watch fan for years I am still just starting to learn about the science and art of watches. I mainly get information from this forum and follow the suggestions of the expertise here.

I enjoy Loupe magazine and also follow W&W but don’t really know which are the best sites to follow.

I find the YouTube watch channels can be rather addictive and can I easily to lose a couple of hours just looking at close up watch shots! I do worry how much of the recommendations are paid for promotions though as some of the Youtubers seem to actively promote the same brands over and over. This makes it harder to trust what they say.

Stupid!

Of course I do! I'm a forum mod and I'm on here every day...reading about watches, mainly! (Along with zapping people and placing pictures inline for those who won't follow instructions! )

I mainly use the app - Watchville

If any new watches/articles catch my interest, then I dig further.

And the Forum of course. Had to say that or I’d be in trouble from the Mods.

You’re very welcome.

I’ve bought a few from reading the articles on there. Plus lots of watch news in general.

Best of all, it’s FREE.

So, as Del says “Everyone a winner, lovely jubbly”

I watch a lot of video watch reviews, especially if I am researching a particular watch, but I like watching general commentaries anyway.

Just One More Watch - Jody in particular is very organised and thorough about his reviews
Bruce Williams
Jenni Elle is always entertaining. The one where her husband bought her a new Rolex is great.
Archie Luxury, but the rants aren't as good as they were.
Tim Mosso at the watch box packs a lot in in his sale videos
David Schwartz puts a lot of effort in. Deserves more subscribers.
The Urban Gentry, Teddy Baldassare, Bark and Jack, Federico.
Andy at The English Watch is good.
Producer Michael
Pride and Pinion is a laugh.
Many others.

I get pointed to a lot of text reviews as well. Worn and Wound, Fratello, Hodinkee. I get loads of notifications on my phone.
This is the only forum I inhabit in the main.

These articles are all found within Watchville.

No, I’m not on a retainer from them.

Web is a fantastic tool for reading specs and features of watches I’ve never heard of
Must admit there are a few u tube channels I watch get ideas and then search web for info also
Go to forums a lot as most brands have them much info on models etc there most of the fun in watches comes from the chase of the new one

I mainly use this forum, and YouTube for comparisons etc.
Then there's my Google home page which offers up various articles from multiple sources.
I should be an expert after 10 years plus, reading and watching, but alas the retention of such information, is not in my make up.
I'm often annoyed by my lack of knowledge and ability to navigate the forum.

I've spent years on forums and youtube, and read a number of books. My knowledge is still very limited.
