Watch box / watch pouch

Post by missF »

I’m on record as saying that the box my LLD came in is ridiculously massive. It has its own gravitational field and I now have a plant sitting on it.

So my question is - if you were offered the choice when you bought a watch of either a box, or a handmade leather watch travel pouch, which would you choose??

I like the packaging Breitling's come in.

Just sold my Longines Heritage Diver 1967. Packing it up now to send and the postage is going to cost a small fortune due to the size and weight of the box!

So I went to buy a watch, and the man in the shop said "Analogue." I said "No, just a watch."

Except in a very special case like an LE marking a specific event, I would always choose the travel pouch. This is one area where the microbrands are ahead of the majors, IMV.

The usual boxes take up so much room, and I never use them - even when the brand describes them as a “luxury presentation box”, they’re usually nothing special. A travel pouch is practical / useful, and even if it doesn’t get used, it takes up less space.

I suggested to CW Customer Services a few years ago that they might offer a choice, but didn’t get a reply.

The breitling box is about a good limit for me of how big watch boxes should get. When I opened the LLD my first thought about the watch was was ‘oh - it’s a bit small.....’
The watch was so swamped by the box that all of the unraveling joy kind of slipped away at that point. The name plaque just looked a bit silly. I said it before, but the watch is the star. No need to make it play second fiddle to the box.

I agree, I'd much rather something usable like a travel watch roll, or a compact, eco-friendly box. But that's me - I'm approaching 20 boxes that need to be hoarded away and I don't really subscribe to an "unboxing experience". But if the major brands are targeting the one-or-two watch owner, then I suppose I get their desire to offer something over and above the watch itself.
Rich.

Ah, I was forgetting that most watch owners aren’t collectors or flippers!

Gravitational field? That’s nowt! My Omega box has satellites.

Quite appropriate for a Moonwatch, I guess. :D

Always a box. Travel pouches are useless to me, I've got wrists.

I’m sure there was some point in forum history when Kip decided that the best thing to do with his collection of watch boxes was to build an extension with them

Now that’s just splendid! You’ve outdone the ADs.
Nope - watch pouches wouldn’t have the same effect!

That's class.

I don't mind a watch box, it is an occasion when you open it and part of the whole watch owning experience and nice to have, although I agree they are a PITA to store once you own more than a few watches.

The biggest players in the field seem to be Omega, I've seen the Moonwatch box which is unbelievable. The SMP I got this week had a decently heavy large box, beautiful polished wood though so very nice.

Having said all that, it must cost a bit to produce these boxes, so if you were offered a say £200 discount to get the watch in a smaller cardboard box that might be an option a lot of people would go for.

One interesting fact the AD told me this week as I commented on the ridiculous Omega boxes was that the 50th Anniversary Moonwatch came in a rather small box as it was meant to be a replica of the original packaging.

Now that comment from the AD is right up there with the usual AD nonsense!

It looks a rather large box to me...
