Never Again

Post by Gasman »

I have bought a couple of watches in the past from the States. Each one has cost me money at customs so I made a promise to myself never to buy from there again. At the moment I have a watch in customs and I’ve broken the promise to myself. I fancied the watch so much everything else went out of my mind. The only lucky thing is it’s the cheapest watch I’ve bought so hopefully it won’t cost too much.

i feel for you as i am in a similar situation in the reverse direction.

i live in the US, and i have a watch stuck in the US customs right now, although, the seller is paying for the custom fee and all. i still feel uneasy as this is my first time dealing with US custom with mail-in order from the internet. The watch came from the UK, and others in the EU who bought the same item has already received it yesterday.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a strap for $29.74 incl. delivery (£25.45) from the states.
Got a card through the door yesterday stating there's a customs charge of £13 (includes £8 handling fee) to pay :grumble:
...well they can FRO! no way I'm paying that [-X
They can return to sender and I'll get a refund.

The Royal Mail Handling Charge is prohibitively expensive for low cost items. We should be able to pay any Duty / VAT charges owed directly to H.M. Government without incurring a Royal Mail handling fee. The £15.00 limit on imports before Duty / VAT is applied is also much lower than many other countries. Many overseas Sellers also make the mistake of adding the item cost /postage cost together and then entering that amount on the Customs Declaration Form thus pushing packages that should be exempt over the £15.00 import limit. Border Force will refund the Duty / VAT in these circumstances but Royal Mail will not refund the Handling Fee ( stated on their website.)

I guess I'm lucky I got my watch from England before October 31.
