Any tips for cleaning a watch?

Post by jkbarnes »

The subject line says it all. Any tips? Or more importantly, anything to NOT do? (It’s a stainless steel watch.)

DO NOT put your watch in an ultrasonic cleaner! Ultrasonic baths should only be used for bracelets, never the watch itself.

Assuming it is remotely waterproof and your sure it's resistance is intact, wash in warm soapy water and brush gently with a soft old tootbrush particularly in the nooks and crannies where gunk gathers. If you can, remove the strap/bracelet first and if a steel bracelet clean in the same fashion or in an ultrasonic cleaner as Lavaine has advised.

My method re steel sports or dive watches that are worn on a bracelet, rubber, sailcloth or Nato is to rinse them under a tap when I take them off, using soap if they have been worn in the sea, for cooking, or for anything else that would get them grubby.

If the watch is on a leather strap, it’s not likely it has been worn for more than a couple of hours doing something inactive like lunch or dinner, so only gets cleaned every now and then, with the strap removed.
