I'm some three quarters the way through Eric Newby's 'Short walk in the Hindu Kush'. Very readable and tells you just enough.

The other I was thinking of, whom you've mentioned already, is Michael Palin. His TV travelogues are very watchable and, presumably, his books are equally readable.
