Following on from Bonny's post about Calvados - the Calvados region of France has more cases of oral cancer than any other specific region in the world - they're brought up on the stuff !
Sadly all the coloured grain alcohols are potentially pre cancerous .
Sorry for the sobering thought - we were always told ' stick to beer - at worst you'll be sick ! ' - the joys of university education !

So another good reason to keep to Malt/single Malt whiskies!

Drink grain and blended grain whisky at your peril.....

I have no great favourite, nor am I an expert on the subject, but I like to try new Whiskies from time to time, usually those available at a discount, but I avoid the big names i.e. Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie et al.

Old Pultney , Highland Park and Balmore have been enjoyed in the past.

I am though partial to a dram or two of Jura Superstition, liking its subtly peaty elements, or the softer Jura Origin 10 year old.

There is a bottle of Benromach 10 year old waiting for me in my understair cupboard, which was given to me by my boss as a Christmas present last year.

PS> I generally drink (sip) my whisky neat.

I leant a new fact about whisky this week.

So, already knew that old sherry or old bourbon casks are used, which allegedly control about 70% of the whisky's flavour. But what I didn't know is that to enhance this, the casks are "flamed" - which basically means set fire to, on the inside.

Are there any whisky aficionados or cooperage experts who know if this technique is applied to all whisky barrels? Or just those for some distilleries?

All alcoholic beverages are potentially carcinogenic. There is a synergistic relationship with smoking. Life is a risk.

These lyrics have always puzzled me,

and them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
singin' "this 'll be the day that I die,
this 'll be the day that I die."

Does drinking whiskey produce such profound melancholia ?

No? It was because the levee was dry.

All barrels AFAIK. It ranges from a light toasting through char to being set on fire.

A pleasant surprise
After hammering the Laphroig last night I went for another bottle during my shopping excursion this morning.
They had NONE. :(
I saw a Tescos* own 10yo Islay malt at £21 and thought "distress purchase, why not?"
When decanting it, I gave it a wee taste ....as ye do! :?
It's mild, more like an Ardbeg, and very flavoursome.
Try it!
*other supermarkets are available
