Thanks Guy.

They're great cars. Why would anyone have a Golf?

The RS had to make way for the 300bhp Volvo, which was amazing but promptly got 'nicked three months later!

46 ... and don't I know it.
:(

Had a succession of Volvos -- 360, 440, 850R, V70T5 -- mostly because the whole family always drove nothing but and because I have legs so long supermodels would kill for them: I simply did not fit into much else. The other advantage is that the top-end Volvos are a bit of a Q-car: they have very decent acceleration (0-60 in 7secs or less) and speed but look so solid, law-abiding and antiques-dealing-Middle-England that I was never pulled over even when doing 90-odd on the motorway and overtaking the rozzers.

Left the fold in 2000 for a grey import Holden HSV GTS -- British Leyland build quality, cornering ability of your average USaian muscle car and drank like George Best, but it was the most fun I ever had in a car with my clothes on. Had to give that one up when I discovered the effects of lift-off oversteer and then found out that the nearest spare parts depot was in Sydney, Australia -- not good.

Then back to Volvo until '06 with an ex-demonstrator Chrysler 300C with the big V8. Lovely car, that: not as big as people always thought (shorter than an Audi A6!), primitive enough not to have all that annoying and expensive to fix electronic gee-whizz-bang gadgetry, a fattish sound to match a turn of speed impressive enough to hold my own with all those Germans on the autobahn, and so unusual that bystanders didn't even bother to apply the usual eyeball status-symbol-income ranking.

Nowadays, it's a Range Rover V8, petrol. Very thirsty, but goes anywhere and fast enough for most situations (don't try to floor it on an autobahn, it's too slow and really quite scary given its brick-outhouse aerodynamics). It helped that it was a bargain, relatively speaking: half-price at 2.5 years old with less than 14K miles on the clock, it was a Chelsea mum's school-run trade-in.

If you were experiencing lift off oversteer then you were doing it all wrong! Lol

I know that ... now!
:(

In my defence, I had only just graduated from safe Swedish bricks and there was no Harry Enfield sitting next to me going "you don't want to be doing that..."

That said, I have already made arrangements that next time I go Downunder, I will be driving an HSV Maloo ute. I may be coming back in a body bag...

I'm 60. Passed my driving test in 1978 when I was 17 and bought my first car in 1982:

VW 1300 (beetle) after driving my dad's Viva & Marina it was a revelation that you could top the speed limit without the car shaking itself and the passengers to bits. This could hit and hold 85mph, I actually had this off the speedo on the other side of Shap! Wrote it off on holiday when I misjudged a second S bend and left the road ...
VW 1303 (Super Beetle) Written off, along with several others when a wall collapsed on it in a car park. Fortunately no-one was injured in either of these incidents.
Ford Escort Mk2 estate. 70mph with the wind behind it. Used this while working away, did 700 miles a week in it. It actually started splitting in half so I traded it in for ..
Lada 1500 estate. The first car I owned that could reliably crack 100mph. I loved that car, survived moves to Germany, Scotland and home again
Lada Riva 1300. Massive disappointment. Had an accident in this that should have written it off. Never the same again so on to a ...
Skoda Favorit
VW Golf Mk 3 estate.
Land Rover Series 3 (ex-military "lightweight") the only car I've ever owned that has increased in value, by some margin. Still have it.
Land Rover Freelander
Citroen Xsara Picasso
Skoda Fabia estate
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left

I like this thread! Mine isn't half as exciting a list though.

I'm 35, passed in 2004. Year is manufacture.

L reg Citroen AX 1.0 - 4 gears and a massive clock where you normally find a rev counter!
K reg Renault Clio 1.4 RT - added some lovely gold wheels along with a sub that took up half the boot
2005 Renault Clio 1.4 Dynamique - my first (and only) brand new car.
2007 VW Golf mk5 GT TDI 2.0 turbo - needed something more practical for longer commute and comfort. Now with a co worker and still going strong.
2016 VW Golf mk7 GTD 2.0 turbo - the TDI had racked up the miles and wanted to treat myself.
2019 VW Golf mk7.5 GTI 2.0 turbo - job role change meant car allowance but not allowed diesel so out with the GTD and in with the petrol version! My first auto as well, didn't think I'd like it but can't believe I waited this long to give my left side a rest

My original post from page 2 in 2013 as follows;-
Bahnstormer_vRS wrote: Sun Mar 31, 2013 5:55 pm 57.

Another long(ish) list I'm afraid starting in 1974, aged 18, and cheating slightly as I'll include my wives's cars (which I've paid for); mostly in chronological order but E&OE.

I could work out exactly when and for how long I had each car, might even be able to remember most/all of the registration numbers, but can't be bothered.

All cars have (fortunately) been new or only a few years old on acquisition and most owned for around two years (ish). M/cycles were owned in addition to cars.

Here goes;-

Morris Marina 1.3 - drum brakes all round and copious understeer; fun!
Ford Escort 1.3 Pop Plus - bought new, kept only for a few months, sold to buy ....
Triumph TR6 Mk II - SAH tuned back to Mk I performance - went 'bang' in a fairly major way, had to borrow funds from Mother to repair it, on condition I sold it
Vauxhall Chevette 1.3 - sold to younger brother who overheated/seized the engine on M25.
Vauxhall Cavalier 1.9 - 100+ Octavo alloys Reg; PGM 51R
Yamaha DT 175 - sold to buy engagement ring
FIAT 127 (wife's)
FIAT X19
Lancia Beta HPE 1600
FIAT 127 GT (wife's)
Suzuki GS650 Katana - on getting divorced (kept the Beta HPE)!
Vauhall Nova 1.2 Swing
Vaxhall Nova 1.3SR
VW Golf 1.3 Formel E - the original stop/start eco car (perhaps) - 1st Company Car
VW Golf 1.3C
Vauxhall Astra 1.6GL
Vauxhall Astra 1.3 - Wife no 2's car; now married 27 years
Mazda 323F (wife's)
VW Golf 1.8GL
VW Golf 1.6 Driver (wife's) - nearly caused a divorce, it kept breaking down (very un-Golf like); but thankfully not.
Mitsubishi Colt (wife's)
BMW 318i Auto
Mitsubishi Colt , 2nd (wife's)
Ford Mondeo Estate GLX 2.0 Auto
Opel Omega 2.5TD Auto Estate - chipped by VanAaken
Ford Escort Estate 1.8TD Ghia X - chipped by Van Aaken (wife's)
Skoda Fabia 1.4 - became my son's car.
FIAT Doblo 1.9JTD (wife's) - she loved it and was great for Karting; Kart et al just went straight in the back. Handling / performance was pretty tidy for a van.
Skoda Octavia vRS TDI - chipped and suspension mods
Skoda Roomster Scout 1.6Tip Auto (wife's)
Audi A5 Quattro S-Line 2.0L TDI - left me cold; car has no charisma - last Company Car
....................
....... and currently...
Skoda Yeti Elegance CR140 4x4 DSG - again chipped with secret stuff plus other mods; great Q-car - loving it 8) :D
Now 65 . . . .

Still got the Yeti :D :D

Now 10+ years old with 80K miles, running sweetly.

I keep looking at alternatives but haven't found anything I feel I would like more; has become known as 'Trusty Steed'.

Age: Mid forties driving license obtained as soon as I could after turning 17 (6 months...)

1989 Vauxhall Astra 1.3L: First car, bought with low mileage just after Uni, ran it for 4 years before selling it to my sister who didnt have it long before sadly some miscreant torched it :(
1999 Peugeot 206 XS 1.6: Bought New (much to my parents horror!) ran for 3 years
2002 Alfa 147 2.0 Lusso: Bought New to replace 2 cars as we just werent using both, ran for 2.5 years cos well it was an Alfa and spent too much time in the garage, though never broke down..
2004 Peugeot 206 GTi 2.0: Another New one, Replaced the Alfa and broke down within 20 miles! Luckily just the alternator plug had come loose (never pressed home properly in the factory) so the battery was flat
2004 Citroen Saxo VTR 1.6: Bought 3 years old as a 2nd car for Mrs Gannet after a job switch
2004 BMW Z4 3.0: Bought 2.5 years old, ran it for 5 years before getting scared of big bills looming, loved its style though
2009 Mazda 2 Sport 1.6: Bought new to replace the Saxo for Mrs Gannet. was ok but should never have sold the Saxo
2011 Citroen DS3 DSport 1.6 Turbo: Bought 6 months old and was a great car, bit of come down after the Z4 but not as much as I thought it would have been
2014 MINI Cooper Coupe 1.6: Bought 6 months old dealer demonstrator - static as it turned out, only had 16 miles on the clock, replaced the Mazda 2
2016 MINI JCW 2.0 Turbo: My current vehicle bought 6 months old again, loving it
2020 MINI Cooper S Sport 2.0 Turbo: Recent purchase new so only a few weeks old replacing the MINI coupe - run in period looking to be rather long given we can't go very far!

All these cars have been/are Manual transmission - I simply love driving and have taken numerous further courses - missing the open road!
