VJ 7750 winding “click” question

Hi guys,

Maybe you have some insights for me. I’m probably losing my mind but can’t hurt to ask.

I recently got the Beast C60 chrono with the 7750 movement. I’m familiar with the faint clicking noise when the watch is fully wound as it’s what stops the mainspring being over-wound and the clutch kicks in to stop that from happening.

But when I unscrew the crown from the case and when I rotate the crown counter-clockwise (as in the opposite of the winding direction), it has an audible “click” as well. I don’t remember exactly, but I don’t recall this from my previous CW C7 Rapide with the same movement.

Thoughts? Concerns? Everything runs fine and time-keeping is the best of any auto I’ve ever had (dead on after 3 weeks when I first got it).

All good, a watch maker replied to me elsewhere

“ In the winding position, there will be a regular clicking if you turn the crown CCW. This is the Wolfe's teeth of the winding and sliding pinions moving past each other.”

Sounds like you and the watchmaker are talking about two different situations. You’re saying while unwinding the crown to get it in winding position, correct? He/she is saying while in the winding position.

Yes it clicks in winding position. Also clicks when unwinding the crown.

Clarification

“ Yes, that's normal. Generally there are 2 types of screw down crowns. Those that disengage the stem as you compress the spring inside the crown, and those that don't. The type that disengage will not wind the movement as you screw down the crown, or cause the teeth of the two parts I mentioned to go past each other as you unscrew the crown.

Most Omega screw down crowns do not disengage the stem. These are actually more reliable crowns in the long run...”

Good info to have, thanks for bringing this up.

I’d always wondered this about my Hamilton based on the 7753. I can clearly feel it still winding the movement as I push in and screw crown back in, which is not the same as my other watches; I can feel those disengage and not wind as they’re screwed back in.

My hammy with the 7753 clicks as its being wound in reverse unscrewing the crown. I had always noticed it but never worried about it.

It’s not specific to the movement. It’s specific to the crown assembly. You’ll find various watches do it, or don’t, and it’s not the actual movement used.
