The Practice of Selling NN as Brand New.

Post by MarkingTime »

I know the subject of buying sale watches to be immediately flipped for a profit is a contentious one, but I've noticed some "Nearly New" watches being sold as brand new very recently and this seems plain dishonest, as the initial buyer would have been well aware of the implications.

Of course, if the watches look like new though, what's the harm?

Could you please clarify which platform you are talking about? I’m assuming that you mean eBay.

The only people who are able to sell CW watches as new, are CW themselves.

Anyone else is gilding the lily (regardless of how they dress it up).

It is eBay, but that isn't the point.

That's not really correct. If you buy a watch from them and don't even open the box then how is it not new? It's may be registered and the 60/48 guarantee may be running down but it's still new.

The OPs point is that someone who buys a NN in the sale then lists it for sale as “brand new” is stretching the bounds of the truth, putting it politely.

Many of the NNs are indistinguishable from brand new, but CW is being honest about the history of that particular piece, and for someone else to wittingly paper over that fact is dishonest.

Caveat emptor, as it has always been.

Personally I only ever buy on condition-price and under no circumstances would I pay anything close to retail for any brand, let alone paying a premium - but that's another subject. I am equally happy to do without. YMMV.

They could always buy a new R :silent: and stick xx% on the price.

Its not new precisely because it has been registered and the 60/60 Guarantee is ticking down.

I revert back to my initial statement.

I agree with Guy. The only people who can sell "brand new" CW watches are CW themselves, as they don't have any authorised dealers who could otherwise supply a brand new watch. So if anyone else is purporting to be selling a "brand new" CW watch then they are not being truthful. The watch has already been bought by them, so selling it on again makes it second hand.

Of course, many CW watches sold on eBay and elsewhere may be legitimately described as "like new", but they aren't "brand new".

It's also worth pointing out that the selling of CW NN/Sale watches at a premium on this forum is not permitted, as per the following section of the forum rules:
10.2 Advertising of Christopher Ward watches, in the Sales Corner or the CW Forum, that have been purchased during a private, public or preview sale sponsored by CW (including the CW website/showroom) within the past 90 days for more than the original purchase price is strictly prohibited.

I entirely agree, once the 60/60 is counting down, the watch is no longer brand new.
Perhaps if there was a concerted run of complaints about 'new' CW listings, pointing out that the only sellers of New CWs is CW themselves, and showing that the warranty is already running, may encourage ebay to remind sellers to tell the truth.
There's always time for one more.

I don’t use eBay myself at all, so I wouldn’t understand the structure, but as Paul says above – is there a REPORT button?

On a slightly related topic, I believe we have allowed the description BNIB to stand in Sales Corner before now. Perhaps, in view of the above, that is not a good idea?

I have in the past bought cars that have been pre-registeted by the dealer. The car is essentially new with only delivery mileage. But I am regarded as the second owner on the registration document. The fact that the car has had two owners when I sell it is reflected in the price.

I'm not sure we've seen it that often recently, but good point. LNIB would be a more appropriate term I think. However, when I'm considering buying a watch I prefer the condition to be described in whole words and sentences! :)
