Diver, driver, flyer

Post by johncolescarr »

After picking up a CW trident GMT (mkII) recently, I’ve had the unshakable notion of collecting a driver, diver flyer trio of CW tridents.

So awaiting the arrival of a CW trident 300 chrono and in hot pursuit of a CW trident classic 38mm.

Boring I know, but I do love a black diver...

I’ll post in the SOTC if and when I complete.

Anyone else have nonsensical collecting themes like this?

Not in quite the same way, no. I used to have a few fairly strange ideas, such as needing an aviator watch for flying. But let’s be honest, when your flying is four hours each way in an Airbus two or three times a year, you probably don’t need one. Nor a saturation diver if you are going to jump in the hotel pool or snorkel off the side of a boat.

But the bottom line is, if you like them, why not?

Three questions:

1. Do you want it?
2. Can you afford it?
3. If you have a co-habitant bank manager, can you get clearance?

If all conditions are fulfilled, then Robert is your father’s brother.

I recently discovered the collecting rules from another member (I forget their name) that are utter gold.

I make a rule now only to get watches I like the look of. Heaven knows how many white dress watches I’ve been through to try to “round” my collection before I realised I don’t really like dress watches...

I have a rule of my own is to buy used or are a price where I can recover much of my losses, not only because I’m cheap, but I also get to experience lots of different watches for little net money. I have a total value limit I commit to my hobby (obsession).

Downer’s Rules

Rule #3. Watch out for the herd instinct.

I tend to think of this one whenever we see a discussion (or link to a blog or article) on what people feel are the absolute must have watches in any collection. It’s not any collection, it’s yours. (Rule #4 is like unto it)

And if you can get around Rule #5 to a reasonable extent, well done and good luck.

Excellent ruleset! I follow similar principles and also when buying new, always ask for the best price the retailer can do for me.

I’ve now got my trio, just waiting for the C65 to arrive. I have to say that the 43mm C60 300 is huge compared to my others, However it wears more comfortably than my 38mm 600 and I have finally gotten used to the size. I think chronographs can be big to maintain legibility with all the subdials.

I can see the chrono being my go to summer watch as well as my grab and go quartz.

Somebody out there has to be collecting all of the military branches... (Cranwell, Dartmouth, Lympstone, and Sandhurst)

It turns out I’m not a collector, more a watch enthusiast. C60 Chrono too big, so selling and after a bronze C60 38mm. I’ve never been a huge chrono fan anyway...lessons learned.

There are a couple on eBay now at not too crazy prices with Best Offer available.

I like adding diversity to a collection by getting watches that can serve different purposes. I used to have a land, sea, and air theme going on (field watch, dive watch, and flieger watch) but have now moved towards somewhat dressy pieces.

The irony is I would probably have more use for an egg timer than any other watch complication!

Talking of food related watches, I have an urge to get one of these, but haven’t as I’m not sure I’d wear it much.
