C60 Apex - Auto winding

Post by Hedgehogger »

About a month ago I purchased a C60 Apex from a fellow forum member and love it so far. I've had it in my rotation for once a week wearing. In the mean time I occasionally wind it to keep from needing to set it again.

Last week I finally broke down and bought an 8 place watch winder. I've been using the default winding settings which is 600 rotations per day, 300 clock-wise, 300 counter-clock-wise. For the other 7 watches this has been more than enough to maintain "full-wind" (based on the power-reserves).

For the C60 Apex this has not even been enough to maintain the power reserve. So this morning I set it to 1200 rotations (the max) which resulted in the power reserve making no appreciable movement. I double checked and the rotor turns freely. Then I just slowly shook the watch back and forth for a long time (20 min) when I could see the rotor turning, which eventually made the power reserve gain about half a day.

I think that rules out mechanical problems, and probably suggests that its just a matter of gearing (i.e. the rotor must turn a ton of times to get the main springs wound). Do any of you know if the rotor charges in both directions on the SH21 movement? Any ideas how many turns it should take to keep these barrels fully wound?

Assuming I don't have a mechanical problem, unless you are wearing this watch in a marathon, I can't see how the automatic rotor could ever keep up?

Here's some photos to keep the thread colorful.

I feel victim to the same issue with my C60 Apex, until I learned that the Automatic SH21, like a Valjoux 7750, winds clockwise only.

Been perfect ever since.

PS> SH21 takes about 20 winds per 24hrs when manually winding.

Thanks Guy, I'll try setting it on clockwise only and see what happens.

In addition to clockwise auto winding, can members here please technically educate me why SH21 cannot hold -4 second per day when power reserve falls below 2 days?

Thank you in advance.
