Where did all the C6 Kingfishers go?

Post by tikkathree »

Where did all the C6 Kingfisher Quartz watches go?

Is it the fate of a (relatively) cheap quartz watch to slide into obscurity fairly quickly?

Postings here seem to be fairly infrequent, postings on the brand allegiant Facebook groups are even less frequent, and I just pose the question "C6 Kingfisher where are you now?"

I suppose I can persuade myself that cheap quartz loses value to the point where residuals are so low that the watches end up in a drawer, given to the grandsons, whatever but I can't substantiate that.

Here's a link to the archive: https://cwarchive.knack.com/cwarchive#m ... 89693c4fb/

I still have one, a black dial version, I'm keen to track down the white dial version but I just wonder where they are: thoughts guys?

It’s an interesting question. When I joined the forum the Kingfisher was certainly popular. However, the Trident was a recent (or relatively recent) introduction and was all the rage.

I think most of us who have followed the brand for years on here have tended to keep up with the trends, sometimes perhaps adopting new styles and models after a little initial reluctance. (Fings ain’t wot they used to be). For some people of course, the demise of a particular line or a rebranding/change of image/logo is the final nail. Some discover other brands and drift away. Some just drift away. Some remain on the forum, happily, despite having vowed years ago never to buy another CW.

I also think there is a tendency for people to have an affection for what was current when they first took an interest; hence my particular liking for, and reattachment with, the original C5 Malvern and the C70 GP series.

I guess some of these early models are not easy to obtain, for reasons that you have stated. They may have slipped into some netherworld, or are simply retained by their original fans. Who knows?

Could have been bought by normal people. You know, the "I bought one nice watch and now I'm done." mass of humanity. I hope these watches are living happy lives.

Additionally I have both yellow and burnt orange automatic C60 Kingfishers...

Gary, that’s almost a horological equivalent of “Who Ate All The Pies?”

Only kidding – I’ve seen photos of your Kingfishers and they are wonderful!

Probably a combination of factors:

- Less produced than the recent C60 and C65 models that tend to form the majority of pics on both the forum and CW FB groups.

- The tendency of some watch FB groups, regardless of their brand focus, to have a high proportion of folk who view current models as a better demonstration of their status, than well worn models from the past. Often demonstrated by the ubiquitous “watch and steering wheel” pics.

Where indeed?

I've had three C6 Kingfisher Quartz pass through my watch boxes a Blue, Black and Cream, bought in Apr/Jun '18 and all subsequently sold with all transaction being via this Forum or the CWE Facebook Group.

I've also had a Burnt Orange C60 Kingfisher Auto, bought from Cash Converters, again in 2018, and sold a couple of months ago to a forum member.

Finally, a yellow C60 Kingfisher Auto bought via the forum, 2018? (I hear you say) which I still have.

I love mine and proudly wear them daily. You’ll often see me posting them on the Facebook page.

My first love....and they say you never forget your first!

Favourite = blue, least worn (but I don’t know why) = yellow.

Inmates able to browse forums to shop for watches, wow :)

To the OP, there was a guy on the forums who had a great thread about oil filling a Kingfisher, it inspired me to oil fill a bunch of quartz watches I have (non CW). Would love to try that on a Kingfisher.

Is that lume dot on the bezel starting to patina already? Or was it always that color?
