Is my C600 full of moon dust?

Post by tikkathree » Fri Aug 30, 2019 5:21 pm

So I had the back off the C600 and found something on the inside: cocoa powder? Rust? Unobtainium? It was dry rather than wet and the movement looks very clean: any thoughts?ImageImage

Looks to me like corrosion particles that have dropped out of the rotor bearing.

Edit: That corrosion being rust.

Indeed. Do you know the service history of the watch?

If not, it has probably spent quite a bit of time in Hungary or Spain and ingested a lot of paprika.

The half minute which we daily devote to the winding-up of our watches is an exertion of labour almost insensible; yet, by the aid of a few wheels, its effect is spread over the whole twenty-four hours.

How old is the watch...looks like dried up lubricant on a movement that has not been serviced in 10 years. Definitely in need to a strip down, clean lubricate and any bad parts changed. I would assume it's running a bit slow now?

As it's a standard movement you should be able to get it serviced at a local watch maker if it's important to keep prices down.

P.S. There is a lot of it, so hopefully it's not the end result of water ingress.

Nope, no known service history. Recent EBay impulse purchase sans box and papers.
And the fact that it has power reserve to spec and keeps good time does not mean it doesn't need service so yes, service required.

It's not running noticeably slow and there's no visual evidence of water ingress but I'd agree that it probably hasn't been serviced.

Possibly dried moon glow, probably rust, surely not maintained correctly.

I’d get a full service by a reputable watch maker. Simon Freese is good and reasonable too.
