So I have three SH21 movements in front of me; a C9 43mm which I got at launch, a Trident bought about 3 years ago and a C9 40mm from these very forums
On the C9 43mm, when setting the time, the seconds hand doesn't move. On the Trident and C9 40mm, the seconds hand jumps back about 5 seconds when setting the time which I understand is normal with the SH21. Wondering why it happens on some watches and not on others, has the movement evolved / improved / been tweaked / using cheaper components since launch?

Re: Has SH21 evolved since launch?
I think that the seconds jump on setting is dependant on the movement being fully wound. ISTR that JJ wrote about this in his movement description.

Never seen this on my C8 PR. MY SEIKO 5 will run backwards with slight pressure against the hands counterclockwise. Kinda scary.
Time and money? I’ve spent most of mine on booze and women. The rest I just wasted…

Re: Has SH21 evolved since launch?
On my C1 GMPR the seconds jump back 5 seconds no matter how much it’s wound.
Perfectly normal. Helps with accuracy when setting I was told.
Evolved over time? Dunno. Mine packed up after two months. Then two months later had to go back again for regulation as it was outside COSC.
Working ok at the moment but I’m less confident of that movement than my Sellitas and Rolex movements.

"the seconds hand jumps back about 5 seconds when setting the time which I understand is normal with the SH21".
<tongue in cheek>
Fully wound or not, that feels like a need for further investment might be needed to refine the movement. After all, there's not much point in a hacking movement if the second hand pings back when you're trying to set it!

Re: Has SH21 evolved since launch?
By "jumping back", I mean it snaps back 5 secs when setting to an earlier time (not when winding forward though) but when you stop turning the crown, it returns to the original place.
For example, if the time is stopped whilst the second hand is on 10 past the hour, and I then wind the time back, the second hand jumps to 5 past the hour whilst the crown is being turned. Once it stops being turned, the second hand returns to 10 past the hour.
I remember something about the 5 sec push back being normal when setting an earlier time (and another mate has checked his Trident which does the same thing) so just wondering why it does this on some watches and not others with the same movement.

Re: Has SH21 evolved since launch?
Maybe the difference between a small sub dial seconds and a center seconds movement? I was told when just a boy to never set the time by moving the hands counterclockwise. Not sure there was any merit in that then, maybe less now, but old habits die hard. I can't say about the C8 PR, I've never tried it.
As far as reliability, although not worn continuously, it hasn't missed a beat in 2 1/2 years. Easily within COSC standards. The only irregularity might be is if it is under 2 days reserve, it seems to lose 3-5 seconds changing the date, then runs pretty much spot on again down into the red.

From the C1 GM 5 Day COSC manual :
"PLEASE NOTE:
When hand setting and manually advancing
the hands clockwise, the second hand will stay
stationary, but the second hand may jump
backwards when the hands are rotated counter
clockwise. The second hand will return to its
original position when the crown is released. "

Re: Has SH21 evolved since launch?
Ok, mystery solved, Paul wins the forum today, it does appear to be about how much the watch is fully wound
The C9 43mm once it's nearly out of juice also jumps the second hand back and it's actually more than 5 secs
I've fully wound the other two watches and the snap back gets less the wore you wind it. Mate tried this on his Trident and it has same behaviour.
Still a few subtle differences: the C9 43mm only needs a winding about half a full charge for the snap to go away completely. The other watches even when fully wound, still snap back a tiny bit.
