Out of sync 24hr ring on C1 Worldtimer

Post by 01cons36 » Mon Jul 08, 2019 12:36 pm

Has anyone else who has purchased a C1 Grand Malvern Worldtimer noticed that their 24hr 'world time' ring is out of sync?

When on the hour the numbers should be perfectly aligned with the city names on the outer dial and mine are not.
They seem to be about 20 minutes out of sync. This is the second one I have received with this problem and it makes me wonder who is QCing all these watches.
You can see from these pics that it is out of sync especially compared to my Frederique Constant Worldtimer which is perfect!
I think another return is in order........

Welcome to the forum.

I am not expert on World Timers but reading CW's explanation of their interpretation of the genre, it would appear that the 24 hours ring is adjustable by the wearer.

From CW's website.

"Whereas the previous iteration of JJ03 found in the C9 Worldtimer re-geared the 2893 to feature airport destinations as a second time zone and featured an hour hand that took 24 hours to complete a revolution, the new envisioning of JJ03 offers a more simple approach. Reverting to 12-hour timing, it also powers a moving 24-hour disc which is read in conjunction with the international cities around it. Turning the crown clockwise will engage this 24-hour disc; turn the crown anti-clockwise, and you'll have control of what we believe to be a unique mechanical development in watchmaking: our time zone-denoting orange city indicator. An innovative addition to the C1 Grand Malvern Worldtimer, this adjustable marker is set against the city of the user's choice, and when read in conjunction with its moving GMT ring offers an immediate reminder of your chosen city's 24-hour time."

There is perhaps a more detailed explanation in the Owners Handbook.

Have you tried this out?

Hi Guy,

It is adjustable but only in jumps of 1 hour (works the same as adjusting a date on another watch etc) . So the fact that the ring is out of sync by about 20 mins means that any adjustment by 1 hour is out of sync too.

Understood.

I presume that the GMT ring is driven in the way that a GMT hand would be and, from past comments on this forum, the ETA 2893 (on which the JJ03 movement is based) is prone to slipping; perhaps if the watch is jolted at any stage (in transit).

Hopefully other members will be able to clarify this.

I have the luxury of just being able to drive to CW within about 30mins so I just took it to them just now.

They confirmed that this is a known problem with these as the mechanism is quite fragile and seems to be prone to damage in transit.
They apologised for my unluckiness in receiving 2 defect models and credit to them handed me a new one straight away with no fault!
They also say they are currently looking into how to sort the problem....hopefully they can.

3rd watch. And apparent admission that they’d been shipping out £1000 watches with a known problem

To be fair, they probably shipped them before discovering the issue so that it has become a known problem.
