Mamma Mia! Poseidon’s Ionian Odyssey

Post by Amor Vincit Omnia »

Poseidon, of course, is my Trident GMT and this is all about going off on a holiday or trip with one watch. I bought the Trident with this very much in mind and, as people who read my review will know, I overcame a few prejudices to do it. So as well as sharing a few holiday snaps with and without the watch, I want to explore the rather novel experience of having just the one watch for a fortnight. Was it a sensible choice? How did it perform? Were there any problems?

The title? Well, we’re in Zakynthos aka Zante, one of the Ionian Islands. Kefalonia, Ithaca (home of Odysseus) and Corfu are near here, Poseidon had a Trident and Mamma Mia? Go figure.

In typical AVO holiday mode, I do very little for the first few days, but will be out and about a bit more starting tomorrow. So there are only a few “office” shots for Korkki to trash at the moment!

The hotel is lovely but small, as is the pool.

But we have the big blue pool as well. View towards Kefalonia...

Nice little marina...Image

First off, not having three or four watches to worry about in the cabin bag was rather a relief. So a definite positive there. I can relax knowing that the valuable stuff is in secure storage.

GMT? I’ve never needed it before in Europe, but it’s a nice touch and has already provoked a comment. I set the watch to EET and the GMT hand to UK time while waiting to board at Stansted last Thursday morning. It is currently +8 seconds. Another bonus.

To swim or not to swim? Well, it’s a 600m WR watch, so of course! It goes in the pool. However, being only 100m from the sea I go down for a pre-breakfast dip and the watch stays in the room. I wore it the first day and it took me ages to rinse the sand out of the clasp.

Lume? Well, it’s no Seiko Monster, but a couple of minutes in front of a LED torch leaves it with plenty of lume to be faint but legible by morning.

The bracelet is a bonus with the expanding ratchet. It’s very warm but has also been quite humid for a couple of days.

Have I missed the others yet? Nope. I’m on holiday and couldn’t give a fig.

We’re off on a little half day tour tomorrow and visiting ancient Olympia on the mainland on Saturday, so I’ll try for an update and a few interesting pics.

But...so far so good.

A great read Steve.
Good to hear you are getting on so well with your lovely Trident GMT, the photos are lovely and give a good feel of the place.
I'm still not sure I could do just the one watch for my main holiday.....

Thank you for sharing your latest adventure, a GMT is by far my holiday watch choice too.

Have fun. :D

@Steve - pleased to hear you are having a relaxing time. Too much sand in the clasp you say. Are you sure you haven’t been rolling around in the surf, trying to recreate Burt and Deborah’s famous scene?

@Kari - excellent work!

Great to hear your one watch experiment has worked out well so far Steve.

Of course, with the GMT hand set to UK time you will be able to be sure not to miss tomorrow nights 'Chat with Chris'.

You mention venturing to the main land to Olympia later in the week. Listening to, and watching, the news this evening has headline reports of wild fires close to the suburbs of Athens. Will your plans change?

Stay safe.

^^^Firstly, Guy, thanks for the concern. Everyone here is certainly sad and worried but it’s a long way from Olympia and we will go if they run the trip.

Secondly, I intend to give the chat a try but Wi-fi is poorer than I thought yesterday. Video kept buffering and dropping out last night.

Yesterday we went to an olive/wine farm in the afternoon and had some nice tastes of stuff.

Then on to Zante town.

A quick check after a pre-breakfast dip in the sea. Half way point of our 2 week idyll.

The watch was last set at Stansted one week ago and is currently +17 sec. That equates to +2.4 s/d. Crown down on the bedside table between about midnight and 0700.

Have I at any point wished I had another watch to wear this trip? No.

If I wasn’t a convert before I am now. Wonderful watch. Now for a spot of brekkers and a day at the office.
