Bad fake on eBay described as CW "Precursor"

Post by gaf1958 »

From the description:

"These watches are now branded as Christopher Ward of London. But, you will be pressed to find this style watch anyplace on the web. It may be advertised as a James Bond watch.
...
MSRP when new: $850.00.
"

http://www.ebay.com/itm/232480666838

Oh really? Looks to me to be a bad fake (or perhaps a poor homage) of a Tudor that's being passed off as a genuine item linked to Christopher Ward.

Question bombardment for the seller methinks? Anyone care to partake?

Interesting piece.

Certainly a fancy homage to a Tudor.

Beware rule #4 :problem:

Well, it's not a fake CW, it's not really even a fake Tudor, but the seller is claiming a lineage that AFAIK doesn't exist; a watch brand that supposedly later became Christopher Ward.

"Returns: NONE – sorry, I have been burned a few times by this. The pictures and narrative are 100% true to the item. So, you can bid with confidence."

If someone at CW is reading this and wants the listing removed due to the false claim, the link you need is: http://pages.ebay.co.uk/vero/notice.html

Perhaps not a fake but a definite misrepresentation....you can make one yourself.

Get the dial here.

The real Trident watch company listed here is based in South Africa.

Definitely not this...."These watches are now branded as Christopher Ward of London."

Probably not this "I am a veteran who has values and NO intention of lying."

The item has been reported to Ebay as a blatant misrepresentation.

Thanks for the info, update and kudos on reporting it (presumably you have reported it) to eBay.

Looks like a genuine lack of knowledge or an assumption made on the sellers part. Seller has good feedback.
He's probably been sold the line himself. Certainly not something I'd be getting excited about and I've seen Trident watches on eBay before.
You never know though.
Caveat emptor.

A Trident in a 40mm case - sounds good to me.

As has been mentioned the style is more "Tudorish". Not sure what's to be gained by making a reference to CW, unless the seller thinks that to be the case.

That's interesting, thank you. I thought that the logo looked like the Tudor shield - add in the text at six and (as Neil said) it all adds up more to Tudor than CW.

Maybe there is some genuine confusion on the part of the seller, mixing up the Trident name with CW's Trident range.

So... Watches for 200£ new and this one is 300£ used. Bargain.

Btw. TIGER Concept makes these for 100£. Same case, rebranded dial

I've just sent a really polite message to the seller explaining why his description is misleading and hoping I can help with an amendment. I even wished him good luck with the sale.

I'm totally expecting him to flame, rather than thank me.

Well, I was wrong there.

I just got a nice message back from him thanking me and saying he'd amended the description.

Seems he'd done a quick google search and made an honest mistake.

Yes, well done. It seems that he's an honest seller, he's even posted your question on eBay along with his answer, so he doesn't seem to be hiding anything. Good to see a result there.

Change to description now includes the sentence "This is NOT branded as a CW watch, just need to make that clear".
