Black hands

Post by cpt127 »

Why don't they give watches with a white face, black hands. The new slimline...... no, the new trident classic......... no, the only one is the Harrison big date, which I have on order. I would have bought the other two if only I could see the hands against the face. Is it just me?

No, not just you. There are few things watch-wise that annoy me more than barely visible hands........

(I can list the others if you wish? )

I'm in this camp, it's the thing that put me off the white dial C5 Slimline(aside from the Slimline text itself). The white dial would have been my favourite had it been given black or blue hands, the silver just blends in to the dial too much for my taste.

I'm glad it's not just me. One of the biggest frustrations I currently find is being unable to read the face properly because the hands don't contrast enough with the face. Fashion over function.

Does seem a strange decision it has definitely put me off the C900 when black or blued steel would contrast so much better and a watch that is difficult to read is just frustrating.

The 'wrong' logo
Incorrect date window placement
Sub-dials that 'eat' into numerals
Dials so busy as to be unreadable
White date window on black face
Massive crowns
Poor lume (worse than none at all)

Shall I go on?

Hmm, I share your sentiments on most of those. Always thought I was alone with my dislike of sub-dials cutting in to numerals.

If done tastefully can be acceptable enough, but I've seen some hideous examples, at times leaving only a fraction of the numbers remaining, better off removing the numbers all together in hose instances.

I'm OK with some of the items but the lume remains almost comical on some CW watches (my C7 is a good example of poor lume; my C10 is better but still not good enough)

I'm wearing this at the mo:

Possibly my favourite watch. When I can actually read the time, that is.

And I can sympathise with most of poppydoodlesdad's pet hates.

Not the easiest to read in some light conditions, but I will forgive it for that! :D

How people cope with the ultimate stealth watch – Black on black on black, I will never know!
I generally have a preference for white dials, but I do like some contrast on the hands. When I ordered the slimline, I avoided the white dial because of this, but in any case I found the blue very attractive!

Not saying I'd buy a black stealth watch as they aren't really my cuppa, but I think they're possibly easier to read than silver on white in bright conditions due to reflectiveness of silver/white, but I guess worse in low light.

Isn't your example above a cream dial? Not nearly as bad as white as at least a bit more contrast and less reflective.

I bought my Dad a silver C3 MKII - that can be really tricky to read. I've got the white version C3 MKII and have no issues reading it

Yes, my C3 is a cream dial and is only tricky in some conditions - the lume appears to be very similar in colour to the dial in indirect daylight. It's fine in low light or full sun.

Its a good point, and i dont know why they dont do this more often. Its a similiar gripe to why, on black faced watches do watchmakers use white day or date dials.

A white face with black/dark hands looks great and functions well. CW got it right with the 2013 fle; the dark blue hands contrast nicely with the white face.
