You MUSTN’T wear it on leather!
Here’s something I haven’t come across before- the Hamilton Khaki I just bought has fairly long lugs, and the spring bar holes are sited far out at the very end of the lugs. This means that leather straps leave a pretty large gap...
Has anyone come across other watches like this before? I find it a bit strange that such a recognised field watch with a long history wouldn’t be set up a bit better for leather? Or am I being pernickity? Maybe I just missed the bit in ‘watches for beginners’ where we were told why Hamilton build their lugs this way
Regardless I’m going to keep it on leather as planned. My mk xvi looks so good on the bracelet, and I’m looking forward towards an equally splendid white dial watch to wear on leather. That’s the game plan The khaki is much nicer than I expected. After wondering for long enough whether I prefer blobs or batons, I just really like numbers
Edited to say: I have owned other watches with quite long lugs so I get that they exist. I think that longer lugs are more elegant and so I associate gaps between strap and case with elegance. But for such an out and out field watch I’m surprised that the set up isn’t a bit more accommodating for leather straps

Nice bit of ventilation with the weather warming up.

I suppose you could always file the lugs down and drill new holes……

Apparently there’s a company who drill two sets of holes in their lugs - that’s a pretty neat thing?
A very quick search around the internet reveals thousands of people discussing lug holes in the 38mm khaki
Possibly fitted out this way to accommodate NATOs better? I always think that I overthink things, but the internet always gets the better of me

And I need to add that @Dancematt included a leather NATO in the sale, so I’m sorted for all options

That’s because the internet is full of people who overdinnaethink everything from booking a space flight to putting the milk in first…and believe whatever they read.
But I’m just an old cynic.

I've got a Hamilton Field Khaki XL.
The long lugs make it eminently suitable for a NATO strap.
Steinhart Ocean Ones have similar long, flat lugs.

Here you pops, Brellum Duobox. Inner holes for leather, outer holes for bracelet. This week I am mostly wearing leather.missF wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 12:03 pmApparently there’s a company who drill two sets of holes in their lugs - that’s a pretty neat thing?

Looking around I seem not to own many long lugs: those I have seem to be hidden away.

Re: You MUSTN’T wear it on leather!
I thought that the thread was going to be about putting leather straps on certain modern watches that are, for good reason, only sold on a bracelet.
One of those things to try once and then think “why did I do that?”
The lug problem sometimes also happens, giving rise to a different outcome…
Watches with lug holes drilled too near the case causing the leather strap to rub on the case.

We might be heading for a disagreement @nbg ! What’s a good reason for only selling a watch on a bracelet??

M'lud, I call to the witness stand exhibit A, the Christopher Ward Twelve Bracelet designed to have a watch by the same manufacturer integrated to it."

In passing I have a Raymond Weil chronograph with two sets of holes which accommodate different strap and bracelet variants.
I think I have another watch with 2 sets of holes as well.

Re: You MUSTN’T wear it on leather!
Bremont seem to be terminally guilty of this. Not too much a problem as all their straps come with curved ends and curved springbars. You can use the springbars in straight straps though and they create just enough of a gap to work.
It does mean that quick release straps often rub on the case and the knurled barrel of the Martin Baker range damages straps if you don’t swap the springbars over.
